cover20090315-ben.jpgSince Jugdish is on a well-deserved Spring Break, I had the pleasure to pore over the voting and comments about "Whatever Happened, Happened" and "Dead is Dead." Lost Season Five episodes 11 and 12 were quite well received by our voters. The first installment of these two episodes revolving around Ben Linus received an 8.05 while the second got a very high 9.28. I am in complete agreement with such high ratings. From Kate's compassion, to Richard and the Others' dealings with Ben and Charles, to Locke and Smokey confronting Ben the story seems to be building to a huge climactic point. Follow the jump to get more opinions.

ESB got the comments going with praise for "Whatever Happened": "I loved how we saw Kate's growth and why Kate came to the Island." Many posters agreed with this. Ladybug absolutely "loved that Kate re-visited Cassidy. They finally talked!" Jugdish said, "Where Aaron is makes sense and is logical. I also liked that it was a human response with a real emotional reason. Kate is finally doing the right thing for someone else." Geronimo Jackson was "glad that Claire's visit to Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island from previous season came full circle to have Kate return Aaron to his Grandma."

normal_4x03-cap552.jpgIt's confirmed: "Dead is Dead." Locke was, but now he is not. Ben Linus is scared of what that means, but Locke is not. It is truly a new chapter in the history of the island. Our spring cleaning project might just be at its most difficult point. We might be tempted to look away and just let things be. But we saw what happened to Jack Shephard in LA when he tried to not think about the island. Matthew Fox said, ''I've always believed part of what was destroying him was his lack of physical proximity to the Island.'' So let's put ourselves in the thick of it and pack up our cleaning box marked "Island." We are asking the three main questions that have to be answered in order for the story of Lost to resolve: Who are the powers vying for the island? What role will the island play in the struggle? And what will the struggle mean for our Protagonists. My first two articles attempted to sort out the Protagonists, alive, dead or otherwise. Locke got his own treatment as the new man. Now we have to ask what is the island?

Thumbnail image for 040609laklost.jpgSpring Cleaning continues here at SWLS. We're still trying to pack up our "Protagonists" box. I need a whole box just for Locke. He's always been his own unique man, and he's always been dealing with boxes physical or metaphysical, so I think he'd be happy with his own. The fact of the matter is that no category correctly holds Locke. We talked about seven groups of people in the story of Lost. Locke has never been fully a part of any of them, and it appears that even in death he is an anomaly. I contend that not only does he not fit into any of the groups of people but he actually supersedes them all. He is the New Man, greater than the ones before him.

03082009_5x07_Locke.jpgSorry Everyone. Here is the much anticipated recap for the previous episode of Lost. Lafleur's Recap should be coming soon as well.

This week on Lost: Our brains reel over who is good and who is bad. Meanwhile Locke gets hurt in about 5 places -- both physically and otherwise, makes out with a mango and learns that no good deed goes uninsulted.

"The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" aired to very mixed reviews this week. It is the first "controversial' episode this season. The grades ranged from perfect 10's to a low of 3. The three came from admitted John Locke fan Lil. This alone is raising eyebrows. The rating average came out to a season low 7.86. The expectations for this episode were high and many believed that the episode did not deliver. This may have lead to some to grade this episode more harshly. "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" showed a some very interesting conversations between Charles Widmore and John Locke. Widmore tells John that "The island needs you John. It has for a long time. John finally asks a key question, "What makes you think that I'm so special?" He gets the very cryptic reply "Because you are". But why is he special. Why is Locke the special chosen leader? What characteristics has John shown during his life to make these powerful people believe he is so special?

cover_507_20090225.jpgLast week in the episode title "316" we finally got to see Jack, Kate, and Hurley (and presumably some others as well) return to the island. The episode had some great moments and came closer to scoring a perfect 10 among Sledgeweb visitors over any other episode of Lost yet. This week, at long last, we get to see the events that led up to the eventual death of John Locke, and hopefully at least a little hint at what his future might hold, if he even has one, back on the island. Will he be reborn? Come back to life? Take Christian's place as the new "face" of Jacob? We'll all have to tune in tonight to find out. So follow the jump for more information and a preview of tonight's episode. Then join us in the live group chat during "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham."

02172009_5x05_montand.jpgThis week's episode was right back up to speed with lots of on-island action and excitement. We got to see some back story, a heart break, a couple of killings and a little bit of Locke's fibula. Off-island we stood around, drove for a while, and then stood around some more.

Speaking of off-island, we pick up at the marina, almost where we left off last time. Sun is still watching Kate yelling at Jack and Ben when her phone rings. It's her mom and her adorable little daughter calling from Korea. She tells the little girl that she met a playmate for her named Aaron. Ji Yeon just wants her mommy to come home. Sun chokes up when she tells her she'll be there soon. She hangs up before she remembers to have her mother forward her a more recent photo of Ji Yeon. She gets out of the car and, because of the yelling, is able to sneak up on the group. Before anyone else can react she cocks her gun and points it at Ben. Jack tries to calm her down but she is still incredibly angry and believes Ben was responsible for Jin's death. Ben calmly explains that that's not true since Jin is alive and Ben can prove it.

013009Richard.jpgLast week I wrote about my views of time travel as a Lost fan, but also as a science fiction newbie. I came to the conclusion that I could live with the time travel since it was linear. I got the impression that they were going to avoid paradoxes and use it as a story telling technique. Daniel Faraday and Pierre Chang both explained that you can not go back in time and change the past which means you can not change the future. After observing 5x03 "Jughead" I believe they have achieved one of the goals, but failed on the other.

"Because You Left" blew away any doubt that time travel is going to play a big part during season 5.The Losties plus Julite (she will be included in the Losties for this article) are skipping through time due to Ben turning the frozen donkey wheel (or is it because the Oceanic 6 left?). I have been against the idea of time travel throughout the series. Even with the "Constant", I was satisfied that it was just Desmond's conscience traveling through time. The Losties are time traveling and I have come to accept this plot line. I am at least satisfied that it appears to be a linear form of time travel, not parallel universes.

The audience of Lost has been looking for something since Season One and the night that Claire woke up in the caves screaming that someone was attacking her. We called them the Others because they are mercilessly at cross purposes to our group of Losties from Oceanic 815. We figured that they had a leader and guessed that it was everyone from Tom Friendly to the erstwhile Jacob to enigmatic Richard until we realized by the end of Season Three that it was Ben. Now we seem to be looking for a bad guy -- the person to aim our energy and anger at, the person to defeat in order for our heroes to be free and equal. The advertising trailers for Season Four have suggested that the freighter folks are bringing worse trouble than any we have known on the island thus far. So we've been watching, waiting for a name. Charles Widmore seems now to be on the short list of people to call villain. But I've got news for you. The writers of Lost are screaming at us that there is one villain and his name is Benjamin Linus. No other character in the Lost universe is more of a lying manipulator than he is. No one else has stooped lower to reach his goals. The audience seems prepared to forgive him while they castigate Locke for misguided decisions, Jack for arrogance and Michael for working for personal reasons. I suggest we redirect our judgment where it belongs.
