Hiroyuki Sanada and John Hawkes will play recurring characters in the up coming season of Lost. John Hawkes will play a character called Lennon who is a spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation, as well a "wily negotiator who is far more powerful than his lowly position would seem to indicate. Could he be working for Widmore or Hanso? Hiroyuki Sananda character is not as well defined. Only word coming out is that it is a signifiganct recurring role.

Original Investigations

Way back in Season 1, investigations weren't quite the same as they are now. We were still figuring out what kind of show LOST was, and the number of easter eggs and hidden clues weren't as numerous or as vigorously pursued back then. For many, LOST was simply a rich island drama with a hint of mystery and suspense. We couldn't have imagined that the Dharma Initiative, Time Travel, or Egyptian deities would come to play such a prominent role in our humble survivor-esque show. In fact, there were only two investigations in this four episode block. In Solitary, we originally took a screenshot of Michael's aquaduct drawing, providing a second look at his engineering ambitions. Michael is a man after my own heart in this regard. For whatever reason, it has long been a dream of mine to move to a third world nation, build an aquaduct, and create my own little version of the ancient Roman Empire. Unfortuantely, we never got to see the aquaduct realized. We also looked at Tom's toy plane that ended up in the Haliburton gun case on the island, and which Kate had earlier robbed a bank to recover.

The black and white themes started early on, and with the season finale appearance of a White dressed Jacob, and an opponent dressed in black - perhaps this is something we should be more attentive to. In Claire's bizarre dream sequence, we see Locke with a black and white eye. This week, we also saw Hurley and Walt playing backgammon with white and black pieces. Of course, this significance of all this is still unknown.

Looking back over these four episodes, I was particularly impressed with how well Season 1 still stands up. These episodes are really strong, and really well produced. I'm reminded why I fell in love with this show to begin with... great acting, great writing, beautiful photography and an intriguing plot. In particular, I thought the cinematography in Solitary was amazing... too bad Michael Bonvillain isn't still doing DP work on LOST! In a lot of ways, I feel that these early episodes are some of the best in the series. Though, I have to say, Josh Holloway and Jorge Garcia have noticeably grown into stronger actors since Season One. I'm also amazed by how much younger everyone looks only five years ago! Even knowing what is going to happen, I still find Season 1 entertaining to watch, and hope those who haven't ever been exposed to LOST will find a way to get in on the experience.

Solved Investigations

One of the biggest questions at the time these episodes originally premiered was "Who is Ethan?". It's hard to remember LOST without Ben, Juliet, and the mysterious league of Others - but back in Season 1, all of this was yet unknown. We now know who Ethan was, and why he was sent by Ben to infiltrate the losties. Season 2 filled us in on what happened to Claire when she was taken, another intriguing Season 1 mystery.

New Investigations

One area that hasn't been completely cleared up, at least to my satisfaction, is Danielle's description of the sickness and the events surrounding the demise of her team. In solitary, she tells Sayid that the "Others" were carriers of the sickness, which infected her crew. After which, she was forced to kill them all, including her husband (Robert) out of fear for what would happen if they were rescued and the sickness allowed to spread through the outside world. This doesn't completely seem to match up with what we've seen in Season 5. The reality, as it turns out, is that Danielle's team was infected at the temple, apparently by Smokey - not on the way back from the Black Rock, and without any obvious "Carrier" transmission by the Others.

Another subject of interest is Claire's visit to the psychic, Richard Malkin, in Raised by Another. Malkin arranged for Claire to be on Flight 815, seemingly with the foreknowledge that it would crash, forcing Claire to raise her baby rather than give it up for adoption. Malkin insisted that the baby needed Claire's goodness as an influence, and that she and only she must raise the baby. He warned that the baby was surrounded by danger, and would not know happiness and safety without Claire's protection. Yet, as events have unfolded, Aaron has ended up largely being raised off island by Kate, and now is left to be raised with his grandmother. What about Malkin's predictions? Will we get back to this story line in the final season?

I also took notice of Claire's pen not working when she is trying to sign the adoption papers to give her unborn baby to the Melbourne couple. The first pen doesn't work, so she is given a second. That also didn't work, and she is given a third pen. But, this has given Claire time enough to pause and reconsider. She walks out, and goes to see Malkin... leading to a series of events that put her on flight 815. This reminded me a bit of Michael's attempts to kill himself after escaping the island and returning to New York. Even when he tried to shoot himself with a loaded gun, it wouldn't fire because the island wouldn't "allow" it. Perhaps the island (or Jacob, or "Esau") also wouldn't allow Claire to sign the adoption papers.

The last thing I will mention is Beth. In All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, Christian Shepard kills a patient named Beth (who was also pregnant) while operating under the influence. This action causes him to lose his license, and sends him on a downward spiral that leads to his death in Sydney, and later zombification on the island. Only because it is LOST, it's somewhat odd that we've never learned more about Beth or any connection between her and one of our other losties.

I apologize for not getting a post up last week, but I ended up sick with the flu and had a heck of a time getting through it all. Rather than trying to go back and do a post for last week, I figured we'd just jump right in with week two of the rewatch, which focused on season 1 episodes 5, 6, 7, and 8. I thought it might be fun to take a look down memory lane at the investigations Sledge had posted back in 2004, and then also include any investigations that have been solved, as well as the ones that remain open. Finally, I'll close out the article by discussing any possible new investigations. These will either be things that we missed (or didn't know was important) the first time around, as well as items that simply have new meaning based on what we now know. We'll get started right after the jump.

Original Investigations

Back in the early days of Sledgeweb's Lost Stuff there was just Sledge, and not quite as many investigations as we have now. There were three investigations over this four episode span, one of which was more of an easter egg, with some Korean text in Sun and Jin's apartment during the flashback of "House of the Rising Sun." When translated, this is poem by a famous Chinese poet named Li Bai, called "Travel in Dreams". There was also a post about some dates on some of Christian's pill bottles, and finally a post about the black and white stones that Jack found on Adam and Eve. Sledge points out how Jack keeps possession of the stones, and as far as we know never mentions it to anyone else, including Locke.

Solved Investigations

As for investigations that were presented within these four episodes that have since been solved, there wasn't a whole lot. The biggest item is probably Jack seeing Christian in the jungle. We took the sighting as most likely part of Jack's exhaustion induced hallucination and there's certainly been a ton of debate over the years as to whether this was indeed a revived Christian, a hallucination, or something else. With the close of Season 5 I'd have to say that the evidence is mounting for the "something else" category. There is certainly no proof yet, but it is mine, as well as many others, opinion that either Jacob or his nemesis (the man being called Esau by fans) have been the cause of all of the hallucinations the losties have been seeing over these 5 seasons, and it certainly puts a new perspective on Jack seeing his dead father on the island.

As for some other solved investigations, the mystery of why Jin was such an ass; watching his wife's every move, regulating the amount of flesh she showed, and not allowing her to speak to the others was certainly solved. We now know that Jin was reacting to the knowledge that Sun had an affair, and he was obviously struggling with who he wanted to be and who he was supposed to be (according to her father).

In other solved mysteries we've learned that Locke was indeed the one who sabataged Sayid's triangulation experiment, in an effort to ensure that they stayed on the island. It seems pretty obvious that Locke felt almost immediately that it was the destiny of all of them to be on that island.

New Investigations

Keep in mind that when I say new investigations, it doesn't necessarily mean that nobody has mentioned these in the years since the first season, it just means that these are items that weren't mentioned or discussed during season 1. With that said, the first item is Christian's appearance to Jack. This was originally dismissed due to Jack's exhaustion, however after more and more hallucinations were seen over the last 5 seasons more of us have realized there was more to this than meets the eye. But this hallucination is a little different than all of the others because we have continued to see Christian season after season. And unlike the other hallucinations, which are usually a part of the past for the person seeing them, Christian has been seen by many of the characters. It begs the question of why he's so special, and makes me wonder if the manifestations of Christian were Esau utilizing his body in the same way that he utilized Locke's body.

This brings up the fact that there may be some importance to dead bodies on the island, and Esau (and maybe Jacob's) ability to take their form. lf you remember, the Others had a ritual funeral where the sent the dead bodies out to sea. Could this be a method to get the bodies away from the island and away from the control of Esau? Also, this season Richard seemed hell bent on getting the bodies of the men Sawyer had killed back. We've seen a lot of people who died on the island show up again as hallucinations to others that are still alive, especially Hurley. Perhaps there has been a reason for all of this.

The final investigation that I'll mention is one that has been discussed a ton over the past five years, but one that we never posted here at Sledgeweb, and that is the finding of Adam and Eve, the skeletons. At the time of the episode, the black and white rock seemed more important than the actual skeletons, but since then the tables have turned. We have almost been guaranteed a resolution to the skeletons by the show's producers but its a mystery we will undoubtedly have to wait until almost the very end for. I just hope that it's worth it.

However, we were also told that it would be clear just who that statue was depicting, and though some obviously saw clearly who it was, there was nothing to give us the official word on it, and some of you, me included, have remained a bit frustrated at the ambiguity of exactly which Egyptian deity the statue was built to represent.

Though it was obvious that it was not Anubis (as I had personally thought), I also wasn't entirely convinced that it was Taweret. Suddenly, Sobek, an Egyptian god that resembled the face of a crocodile seemed a likely candidate as well. I did post in the investigations after the season finale that Taweret seemed the most likely possibility at the time but I also didn't really want to believe it, simply because there were so many better deities in my opinion. But ABC has settled the speculation for us, and in a rather quiet manner, I might add. According to the most recent recap at ABC.com, the statue is in fact Taweret. I know, I know, many of you saw this from the very first moment we caught a glimpse at the back of the statue, so go ahead and use the comments below to proclaim your brilliance, cleverness, and aptitude for figuring out the mysteries of Lost, something I obviously suck at.

And now, a little about Taweret. Wikipedia has this to say about the Egyptian Goddess:

Her name means (one) who is great. When paired with another deity, she became the demon-wife of Apep, the original god of evil. Since Apep was viewed as residing below the horizon, and only present at night, evil during the day then was envisaged as being a result of Taweret's malfeasance.

As the counterpart of Apep, who was always below the horizon, Taweret was seen as being the northern sky, the constellation roughly covering the area of present-day Draco, which always lies above the horizon. Thus Taweret was known as mistress of the horizon, and was depicted as such on the ceiling of the tomb of Seti I in the Valley of the Kings.

Later they go into more detail about how Taweret became known as the Goddess of fertility and child birth:

Early during the Old Kingdom, the Egyptians came to see female hippopotami as less aggressive than the males, and began to view their aggression only as one of protecting their young and being good mothers, particularly since it is the males that are territorially aggressive. Consequently, Taweret became seen, very early in Egyptian history, as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnant women wore amulets with her name or likeness to protect their pregnancies. Her image could also be found on knives made from hippopotamus ivory, which would be used as wands in rituals to drive evil spirits away from mothers and children.

In most subsequent depictions, Taweret was depicted with features of a pregnant woman. In a composite addition to the animal-compound she was also seen with pendulous breasts, a full pregnant abdomen, and long, straight human hair on her head.

As a protector, she often was shown with one arm resting on the sa symbol, which symbolized protection, and on occasion she carried an ankh, the symbol of life, or a knife, which would be used to threaten evil spirits.

As the hippopotamus was associated with the Nile, these more positive ideas of Taweret allowed her to be seen as a goddess of the annual flooding of the Nile and the bountiful harvest that it brought. Ultimately, although only a household deity, since she was still considered the consort of Apep, Taweret was seen as one who protected against evil by restraining it.

When Set fell from grace in the Egyptian pantheon, as a result of being favoured by the unpopular Hyksos rulers, he gradually took over the position of Apep, as the god of evil. With this change away from Apep, Taweret became seen only as the concubine of Set. She was seen as concubine rather than wife, as Set already was married to the extremely different goddess, Nephthys, to whom no parallels could be drawn. It then was said that Taweret had been an evil goddess, but changed her ways and held Set back on a chain.

So I have to ask this question, does the reveal of the statue being Taweret give any semblance or meaning behind Jacob and his Nemesis (being called Esau by many of you)? Could Jacob and Esau be represented in Lost as some form of Apep and Set, dieties associated at times as the Gods of Evil? It seems obvious that Jacob "took" something from Esau in order for him to have such a desire to kill him, maybe it was the taking of his status as the God of Evil. It would certainly put an interesting spin on things, if both of them turned out to be some manifestation of this tale. Of course, that doesn't make much sense when we look at how Jacob was wearing white, as if the producers wanted us to realize he was a "good" guy, and he also seems to have a lot of faith in mankind as well, a trait I wouldn't expect to see in the God of Evil. But still, interesting none the less!

I've been claiming for most of the season now, since we first caught the back of the statue, that it was the Egyptian god Anubis. Tonight, we finally got to see the front of the statue, and it is very clear now that it was not Anubis at all. It appears, as best as I can tell, that the statue is either Sobek or Taweret. For more great information on both, follow the jump.

The image below was posted several months back by a user named Viral. Now that we have the face to go with the images below, it seems even more likely that the statue is in fact Taweret. Taweret was the goddess of motherhood, and you can read more about her here. For all intents and purposes this seems like it is the match for what the statue is. However, I'd like to drop in one other possibility I've seen mentioned on a few other lost sites.

Sobek is also being mentioned as a candidate on some Lost sites tonight. Sobek doesn't match the statue completely from behind, but you could argue that his face, that of a crocodile, is very similar to the statue's face. Anyway, what's most interesting about Sobek is this:

Sobek's ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part.

His rival, wearing a black shirt while Jacob wore white, showed up just as the Black Rock was arriving. The two had some words and the rival expressed his desire to kill Jacob, and that he would find a loophole, and Jacob made it very clear that he would be waiting right there, under the statue, whenever the rival was ready. In the past, the hiatus has been a nice break for some of us to escape the world of Lost for a few months before being sucked back in to our great little community. But this summer will be different for some of you who chose to join us over the long hiatus. I will be hosting a rewatching lost series at our good friend Docarzt's Lost Blog site this summer, and Sledgeweb's Lost Stuff will be directly involved in the festivities. To get the details on just what reWatching Lost will be and how you can be a part of it, follow the jump to the rest of the article.

reWatching Lost, put simply, is a cross between a book club and a watch party. We'll start our journey on June 1 and over the course of the next 7 months we'll be rewatching every episode of Lost, four episodes a week during the summer, then three episodes a week through the fall, leading up to the season 6 premiere in January 2010. Sound ambitious? You bet it is! This is our last summer and next season will mark the last one of a show that we all hate to see go. For this reason its never been a better time to do this, and what better way than as a community of fans.

The details are quite simple. Monday of each well will begin our new set of episodes to watch. If you choose to participate with us, you'll need to watch the specified four episodes between Monday and Sunday of each week. On Sunday afternoon/evening, I'll be posting a general writeup article at DocArzt and Friend's Lost Blog. This writeup will give a general summary of the 4 episodes and point out some items of interest that may have more meaning to us now that we know what we know. At the end of the article, I'll provide links to other lost sites and blogs who will also be participating in the reWatch party. Sledgeweb's Lost Stuff will be one of those sites.

SWLS's Role
Here at Sledgeweb's, we'll be participating in the event by writing at least 2 articles each week over that week's episodes. One article will be to remind viewers of the mysteries/investigations from those episodes that may bear more significance now that we know what we know. The second article will delve into any mysteries that were presented that seem to be a dead end, or probably not resolvable by the end of the series. The second article will be mostly speculation based on what we've seen through the fifth season. In addition there may be more articles at SW each week that delve into various aspects of the reWatch.

Not interested in trying to rewatch four episodes of Lost each week, or simply don't think you can keep up? That's fine too. Feel free to pop in on the site each week (new articles go up every Sunday) and read what we thought about the episodes, regardless of whether you had a chance to watch them all or not, and let us know what you think.

Further details as well as the schedule for what episodes we'll be watching and writing about each week, see the official launch post here at Docarzt's. I sincerely hope you'll join us for this reWatching event and ride the wave with us to the final season of Lost.

Chang wants to know if they're really from the future, and Hurley awkwardly denies it. Chang knows just the question to ask too, first asking when Hurley was born, and finally asking him who was the president. You can see Hurley struggling for just a moment before he spills the beans. What's even more funny is that when they arrived at Dharmaville, Hurley asked Sawyer what he should do if they ask him questions, like who the president is. And Sawyer just responded wtih this isn't a gameshow. See! If Sawyer had just told him who the president was, Hurley could have pulled it off!
