Since Jugdish is on a well-deserved Spring Break, I had the pleasure to pore over the voting and comments about "Whatever Happened, Happened" and "Dead is Dead." Lost Season Five episodes 11 and 12 were quite well received by our voters. The first installment of these two episodes revolving around Ben Linus received an 8.05 while the second got a very high 9.28. I am in complete agreement with such high ratings. From Kate's compassion, to Richard and the Others' dealings with Ben and Charles, to Locke and Smokey confronting Ben the story seems to be building to a huge climactic point. Follow the jump to get more opinions.
ESB got the comments going with praise for "Whatever Happened": "I loved how we saw Kate's growth and why Kate came to the Island." Many posters agreed with this. Ladybug absolutely "loved that Kate re-visited Cassidy. They finally talked!" Jugdish said, "Where Aaron is makes sense and is logical. I also liked that it was a human response with a real emotional reason. Kate is finally doing the right thing for someone else." Geronimo Jackson was "glad that Claire's visit to Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island from previous season came full circle to have Kate return Aaron to his Grandma."
People had mixed responses to Jack's seemingly new-found faith. Geronimo Jackson liked "the new spiritual Jack, finally showing his man of faith side which he always had." Cardi likes "surly and frank Jack." However, Novashannon disagreed, "I hated passive-aggressive Jack. His refusing to take action is, in its way, taking action." Mrs. Alpert felt that "he took 'whatever happened, happened' to a whole new level: laziness!" LiL hopes that this concludes the Jack/Kate/Sawyer triangle.
Hurley and Miles intriguing conversation about time travel and its effects garnered nothing but rave reviews. Mrs. Alpert thought that "the Miles/Hurley conversations were informative, absolutely hilarious. We needed the humor. It was also a great shout-out to us who crazy-post about Lost." First time voter LostfromtheStart said that the discussion was what raised this episode to a 9, beginning with "the Back to the Future reference. This is the classic argument we have already had here several time. I absol-freaking loved it!"
The drama around Ben's healing in the Temple began in earnest in this episode as well. Juggy liked the "tease as to what the temple is capable of and that the Losties actions made Ben who he is." However, he wasn't sure about "the 'Ben will not remember this story line' - feels like an easy way out." RazzleDazzle and many others agreed that "the ending scene with Ben and Locke was priceless." Mrs. Alpert thought "Locke's line 'Welcome to the land of the living!' was just too, too corny" while LiL and I thought it was a moment worth waiting for. Cardi enjoyed how "I can still have theories popping up all over the place in my head about what's going to happen."
As the story continued in "Dead is Dead" we became even more impressed. Asmodean along with 56 percent of the voters gave it a "TEN in all caps!" JB enthused, "Amazing ending, unpredictable, and definitely a wow episode! I loved the return of Alex." LFTS summarized the episode saying he liked "Locke's new found self assurance and knowledge, the temple built around Smokey to pay him homage, Ben making Caesar fly but letting Des and Penny live." He is also a fan of the new Ana Lucia of the island, Ilana, while LiL hopes she is "short lived."
There were some articulate criticisms of the chapter though too. Juggy complained, "I am not getting any feeling of momentum." Razzle Dazzle didn't like "Ben getting off that easy." LiL did not like the "Indiana Jones" feel of the temple happenings. Several people focused their complaints on the production of Ben's memories of Alex. Bambi "hated the end with the smoke" and Time-Jumper the lone vote of 6 thought he was "watching the Wizard of Oz. All the temple stuff was really underwhelming."
Those of us though who voted 10 saw surprises, answers and more drama building. Sweet Old Lady said in her great straight-forward manner: "I like Locke when he is confident and wise. I like to see Ben squirm. And I like to see any episode that doesn't orbit around Jack/Kate, although the new Jack is better in my opinion than the old Jack." JaSon gets the last word: "This is why I watch this show! I want more!"
