When Frank reappeared on the Hydra island Ilana demanded "what lies in the shadow of the statue," an obvious code of somekind that Frank didn't even TRY to guess. I mean, come on, in that situation you at least gotta throw out a guess, like "Twinkies!" So this begs the question, who is Ilana, and who's side is she on? Follow the jump for another look at Ilana's demands.

Nothing lies in the shadow of the statue .... THERE IS NO STATUE ... or do you mean what lies in the shadow of "the foot", or what lies where the shadow of the statue used to be when there was a statue?
Come on you really think its coincidence that there code uses a statue and there happens to be a giant foot of what use to be a giant statue on the island.
So there has been a lot of interesting chatter about the statue. I originally thought it might be Anubis but the features, at least from behind, did not match up. The scene in the actual lower temple area did look like Anubis holding an outstretched hand to "smokie" but the back of the statue did not fit.
I looked around a little more and read some more Egyptian lore and found Taweret. This is an interesting theory since she is an Egyption goddess of fertility. Her name means (one) who is great. When paired with another deity, she became the demon-wife of Apep, the original god of evil. She had thousands of followers, mostly woman but some men too.

And so, maybe Llana and Bram are followers of Taweret from an ancient Egyption civilization - much like the Templars. Could be...
I still think the island is a crashed space ship from a long, long time ago and it has become to look like an island. Or, the ship crashed on the island and its' technology became part of the island - you know along the lines of aliens and pyramids. Just my crazy thinking...
Cheers!

This may seem elementary, but if we're to take the question of "What lies in the shadow of the statue" literally, it seems to me it would depend.
The statue being Anubis, stands tall like a giant sundial...if you can imagine. What would be in its shadow would depend on the time of day it was, would it not? And so far, along with the question, we've been given no reference as to a time frame. Maybe they'll shed a little more light on it for us. Hoping. :-)
Otherwise, we have to think outside of the literal meaning of the question and it becomes a riddle, or code for something.
The whole “a” and “the” thing was done on purpose. He said "the" now because he assumed Lepidus knows about the temple.
Howdy everyone! Great theories on here!
So, if anyone played the Lost Experience game back in the Summer of 2006 you will recall all the games and adventures of Rachel Blake. She turned out to be the "lost" daughter of Alvar Hanso, the man who helped fund the DHARMA Initiative. Two of the other funders of the program were Charles Widmore and Mr. Paik, Sun's father. Also, you may recall that Alvar Hanso's long lost grandpa was Magnus Hanso, the Captain of the Black Rock. Follow me?
Anyway, the game progressed to the point of Rachel Blake tracking Dr. Thomas Mittlewerk who was putting together a new "squad" of DHARMA folk to go back to the island. It was all very super secret, and seemed very dangerous.

Could Ilana and her misfit crew of "shadow" soldiers be part of that new team? Maybe...
As for "what lies in the shadow of the statue" I think it is a code, and an answer in one. The temple obviously lies in the shadow of the statue, or did when it was still present. Also, what is the statue? I think it's Anubis - Egyptian god of the underworld. But then, what is the smoke monster? Maybe it is the soul eating demon that worked for Anubis called Ammit.

Just throwing my hat into the ring. I have more thoughts on this and will post some more things. This is a great forum by the way and you all are onto something!
Cheers!
Glad I saw this clip because I was wondering what she actually said. I noticed that when Bram asks Miles the question, he says "Do you know what lies in the shadow of A statue."
"A", not "The." Like it's referring to any statue, not specifically the four toed one.
Guess it was just a continuity error.
I can't remember, but was there ever a time when it was made certain that the person who sent the freighter was Charles Widmore?
The answer is darkness......!!!!
Having a code is something we've seen before. Remember Desmond asking Locke, "Are you him?" and when Locke says "yes" Desmond says, "What did one snowman say to the other snowman?"
I don't think Ilana is scared. I think she is either under Smokey's spell (after all, where did he go for so long when Ben called him?)or she is with Whidmore's team. I like the idea that it might be Dharma, but I doubt that. All of Dharma is dead.
they aren't on the island with the statue, so i don't think they saw it. i think they do know about the island and are there for a purpose, just don't know what it is yet.
They have only just got their guns so the Sawyer, Juliet outrigger shooting scene hasn't happened yet. They seem quite regimented and I wonder how they knew to be on flight 316? If it is the newbies on the outrigger, shooting, they could have thought that Sawyer&Co could warn the 'others' of their arrival. At a guess, I say these new people are associated with Dharma.
Watching it again I guess u could be right. Its hard to say because we don’t know the context of her question. We haven’t seen her flash back but we know some of them made it to the 815 camp because we saw the boat; they had boats and probably used them to explore. They have kind of an advantage over the 815 survivors they found there hatch and weapons right away. And I’m sure seeing the boat with sawyer, john, the freighter people and Juliet disappear has added to there fear
I'm telling u it’s not a riddle it’s a literal question I don’t even know where u guys got this whole riddle thing. When I watched it the first time I didn’t hear a riddle or code I heard a question and then when she said tie him up were taking him with us only verified the temple in my mind, but if could be the donkey wheel or something else. She a tuff cookie and probably saw something that scared her maybe a dead person. I don’t know but maybe sometimes we are looking for complexity when it’s not there.
The Orchid Station and the 'donkey wheel'.
When the group sees the statue from behind, where are they standing?
A shadow can only be cast with a light source, say the sun. Several egyptian gods/goddesses are portrayed with a solar disk on there heads.
As the statue no longer stands, the question of 'what lies in the shadow of the statue', besides being a code for the new gang, is obviously a clue as to what the statue is, or is for.
Maybe the island and the monster are two different things. The island healed john the monster didn't. And since we know the smoke monster can take on different forms then we know all the people like jacks father are probably really dead. Dead is dead, this would include John. We know the smoke monster is the sickness, the quarantine on the hatch suggest the dharma knew that also; that it may brain wash you. Ilana is talking about the temple, she saw the foot and if the statue was there it probably would have cast a shadow on the temple, she said what lies in the shadow of THE statue if it was a riddle or code it makes more sense to say what lies in the shadow of A statue. Why is she freaked out well maybe something happened when Ben got judged outside the temple.
I am a long time reader and first time poster. The fact that so many thinks the smoke monster made Iliana "Crazy Sick" made me have to post and drop some knowledge.
Caesar and Iliana are obviously part of some group. I am guessing Widmore, but could be a secret third party.
The were supposed to pretend to be helpless little survivors until Caesar being killed forced Iliana to speed things up.
She then needs to ask everyone the "secret question" in order to figure out who is with her and who is not. There was no monster making her sick or her going crazy. She is very much sane, devious and pretty hot.
More Knowledge dropping to come.
I think the crate holds either some type of weapon or (fingers crossed) Abaddon's dead body! I would love to see an intense on island discussion between Alpert and Abaddon. They seem to be each other's opposite in the "Good and Evil" realm.
Most importantly, I still want to know what Locke "owes" Abaddon, from the hospital interaction.
AND
What did Boone mean when he told Locke in the sweet lodge "he needs to bring the family back together"??????
I thought the crate they had was John's casket. Is it not?
I haven't read any responses yet so apologies is I'm repeating something that's already been said - I'm thinking that they've been under some sort of time warping effect while Lapidus was gone. Things are much more wack than they were before they left. That crazy guy with Ilana was nowhere near as animated before. Can you say 'Season 6'?
Could she and her (dead?) pal Caesar be descendants from the original inhabitants of the Island? There is something fishy in the air around LOST island in the "present".
The reason for Widmore is we know the "Freighters" had codes and strategy. "'Tell my sister I love her,' Naomi doesn't have a sister! That's what we say when something is wrong."(or something to effect.)
If he's sending multiple teams for this war, they won't know what each other look like so they figure this out using these codes. The plan was to get to the island and find others on "your side." They had to know help might still be there in some of the "Freighters."
If there is to be a war, I think what we didn't see is the assembling of the "Soldiers", Widmore recruits, Llana and soldiers on the plane through code figured out whom are with Widmore and who are passengers. Passengers are captured/killed/whatever. They "some how" already find guns, while it took the "Survivors" days before they found guns, except the marshal's. They also reveal a giant crate?? So this is very premeditated.
They want to introduce us to the "Soldiers" because Frank's spontaneous "I'm going to the plane to call for help" while he was pretty gung-ho about finding the rest of the O6 earlier? I find it more difficult to believe they will introduce a new "side" of the war, as opposed to adding characters. It'll be less time consuming and confusing to add characters, like the "Freighters."
It did sound like some kind of way to determine someone working with you. It se3emed to be a ritually posed question requiring a specific answer. The question is : for whom does Ilana work? Widmore seems more likely than Ben, although I don't see it being Widmore, either. The plot thickens!
I think Balsley is on the right track. I think the conversation between Sayid and Ilana on the plane was a clue. Sayid asked her if she was working for Ben and she claimed not to know him. Assuming she is working for Widmore, she may have been telling the truth because she wouldn't necessarily need to know who Ben is since Widmore seemed convinced that Ben would be unable to return to the island. Then again, Ilana showed up after Ben placed his phone call to Widmore prior to his attempted murder of Penelope. (She met Sayid in the hotel bar the night before the flight.) Perhaps Ilana and her team are Widmore's insurance policy in case Ben succeeded. I am hoping that they are the reason Faraday has disappeared from the last several episodes. Has he snuck off to execute the secondary protocal? I'm becoming inpatient as to his whereabouts! The only reference we had was when Sawyer/Lafleur indicated he was no longer there. I thought he meant Daniel's mind had checked out but perhaps he literally left camp.
Frank's improvisational skills only apply to safely crashlanding aircraft.
Soory, didn't mean "on purpose", meant "for a reason"
The interesting thing about the Widmore theory is, that we more and more hear that "The Island chooses" or "The Island decides", so those guys are probably there on purpose...
Still, I'd prefer to say they're sick from smokey. Makes no sense to me, that they out of nowhere ask for a password when they were working for Widmore all along. Also they might have known that Frank isn't on their side anyway.
Last, Ilana said "Call the others, let's begin" (or something like that), which sounds to me like a kind of weird ritual or something... Doesn't sound Widmore style all along I think...
I think the most obvious assumption is that they are working for another Widmore team. If he's as wealthy and passionate to find the island as they make it out to be one team searching for this island won't be all he has.
Not to mention Locke told Widmore he was going to bring everyone back so Widmore knew where the O6 were and what went on just as Ben did. Ben seemed surprised to see Sayid on the plane so why wouldn't Widmore have people on the plane, in Llana's case she had a "close tabs" on one of the O6 to to ensure she would get to the island as well. Since Faraday, Miles and Charlotte are still assumed to be on the island they would have a code for other teams so they know they're on the same side. Hell, Faraday had the "Secondary Protocol" written in his book. Not to mention Abaddon, who I still believe is alive as well as Ceasar, orchestrated the first team with Naomi he would have done the same with other teams.
If this isn't the case, which I find hard to believe it's not, who's to say during the time Frank is gone someone like Richard or Faraday didn't make their way over and "turn" them?
I think she is part yet another group controlled by Eloise who is playing both Widmore and Ben and Faraday and Jack and soon Desmond again. I think she's been in control all along...
Sawyer and those left behind by Locke at the well saw the back of the statue in episode 8, LaFleur. So, I think the well that leads to the frozen donkey wheel lies in the shadow of the statue. As far as Ilana goes, I don't believe she ever was a bounty hunter, I believe she is an other that was given the assignment to bring Sayid back to the Island.
I don't think guessing a code word would have been the right thing to do. One thing we've learned is tell the truth. If you lie you have to keep telling the lie exactly the same or you get caught. Say I don't know and you might get off easy. In this case, Frank didn't get off easy. But he may have gotten worse if he tried to bluff and give a fake answer.
"I just hope they don't want to introduce new charakters to the series... Didn't work out for Nikki and Paolo..."
Doesn't seem to be working too well for Caesar, either... ;)
Illiana being part of a Widmore group is just too obvious and Lost has already done that story. Do you really think they are going to set up a War that repeats the end of season 4? I doubt it strongly.
One thing Lost isn't and that is predictable.
Making the dudes on the small island crazy would kind of explain why Smokey was late to judge Ben...
But I think that's a weird theory :D
I just hope they don't want to introduce new charakters to the series... Didn't work out for Nikki and Paolo...
Hopefully it fits into the Story...
You're probably right lostfromthestart, but he could have at least guessed something! I mean, in that situation, how can you not at least make a guess. Be it twinkies, rotton fish, or "your momma's underwear" Frank is gonna have to think on his toes a little better. :)
Stimpy, I may be wrong, but I think that the incident that wiped out Danielle's crew was when Montand was taken by smokey a few episodes ago. He came back all crazy and trying to kill her, so she shot her whole crew to death - claiming that they were all sick. See "This Place is Death."
I think Ilana just picked up the Rousseau bug, and is now *C-R-A-Z-Y* like the incident that wiped out her party... which has conveniently been left unexplained to date.
Just a guess, not a theory, cuz LOST has a way of making ya do that!
This was a really weird moment for me. It seemed like she changed real abruptly.
What lies in the shadow of the the statue? Ben!
Twinkies? I don't think that would have worked out any better for him.
Ben may "say" that Locke is the true leader of the island, but in reality he wants to regain the leadership role. However, he has totally underestimated Locke's "oneness" with the island. He doesn't understand how Locke can know things (like where to find the temple) that he has no business knowing. Locke may not understand his new level of knowledge either, but he is now trusting the island to guide him. Ben wants redemption and to lead in th ecoming war. Widmore KNEW that only Locke can save the island, that Locke would follow the island's lead to fight the coming war. This epi really has me trusting Widmore. More and more.
I don't think she's part of Widmore's group. I think she's part of a group we are just meeting that will be the REAL threat to the island.
I don't think the coming conflict that Ben and Widmore have mentioned was between the two of them specifically. They just represent two different factions or philosophies, who are both interested in defending the island against the coming threat.
Ben managed to get Widmore exiled by revealing how Widmore had "broken the rules" that apply to their leader, which allowed Ben to become the new leader. Widmore either doesn't think Ben has the strength to do what is required in the coming conflict, or thinks his strategy is doomed to failure, which is why he's been trying to engineer Ben's removal from leadership.
But now the return of the O6 (and Locke) - so important to both Ben and Widmore - has also facilitated the introduction of the real threat to the island.
nevermind.
what about the giant foot statue from the first season?
there was only ever a glimpse of it but thats a statue, big enough to cast a shadow.
i think she is part of the next group that Widmore has sent to the island.
another way you could look at it is chouce of words maybe.... lies itn ehe shadow of the statue..... lies coudlmean the anti truth? and also shadow could mean somethign like valley... or even referign to smokey itself... but durign their tiem the statues isnt complete... i woudl have said "Smells of carrots too lol"
I like your idea that the temple may be at the back of the statue, it would tie in nicely. With regards to who Llana is, well i'd suggest that they were possibly made 'sick' by smokey.
Perhaps it's the temple? I believe when we saw the temple we could see the back of the statue, thus when the sun is at the right angle, the temple is in the statue's shadow.
The message from Cheng and Faraday made it to a present day group related to Dharma and they are coming back to the Island to claim it as theirs or maybe just blow the damn thing up.
"Carrots....it smells like carrots!"
I got the feeling that their small group (3 or 4) had an agenda, and that they were all on that flight for that reason. I wonder if the 5th toe is in that box?
I think she read something that told her to look for the statue's shadow. Or maybe she is on the bad side (against team Richard) in the war that's coming.
An other maybe? Who perhaps managed to get off the island? Then, find her way back onto the same flight? Who knows? I don't know... anything is possible with this show...
