5x12: Anubis hangs with Smokey

5x12_anubis_smokey.jpgWhen we saw the back of the statue a few weeks ago, it looked a lot like the Egyptian God of the Underworld, Anubis, but there were quite a few naysayers out there. I'm sure that even after another appearance by Anubis in tonight's episode, we'll still have those naysayers, and that's fine. Tonight, while Ben was in the Temple catacombs we got a glimpse of some drawings on the wall. Pictured above appears to be Anubis with Smokey in front of him. You could probably even say that on the left side that could be the donkey wheel. Also an Ankh and some snakes and some other random stuff. Let us know what your thoughts on this are after the jump.

Hax, I think the connection to Stargate is only that both used Egyptian heiroglyphs and other Egyptian things.

My first reaction when I saw the image was Anubis is asking cerberus to guard something, perhaps even bestowing some power upon him.

I couldn't make out most of the symbols but the 2 eyes, one low down perhaps over a snake, the other up high with light coming out (perhaps a crudely drawn eye of Ra).

I wonder whether they symbolise cerberus' ability to judge character (good and bad) which fits in with the whole black and white theme a bit.

If this now is Anubis, the underworld guy, he might have a connection to the hatch. When the counter thing in the hatch started to show hieroglyphs someone translated it to "CAUSATIVE DIE, or roughly CAUSE TO DIE... "

"Note: At Comic Con 06, Lost writers said that the translation they were hoping to convey was "Underworld" for these hieroglyphics, which would be a place of death." - Copied from the link above.

If these hieroglyps were meant to be translated to "underworld" then the hatch could certainly have some connection to Anubis, smokey or the smokey-temple dont u think?

Oh and anyone else saw the simularities to the Stargate universe? We got Anubis, Ra and snakes on the pictures - Goa'ulds anyone ? :D

The cracks through things must mean something. I mean a crack through the wheel... and on anubis' crotch...

In the picture I saw, the statue definitely had large, pointy, Anubis ears! I think the statue and temple are both for Anubis. That would explain the healing power of the island, and also the power to bring Locke back to life. It looked like the monster was listening to Anubis, who was offering it something. I also saw the sheel, the inverted ankh, the Eye of Horus (in the middle) two snakes or possibly a sanke and wavy lines for waterI couldn't wait to get here , because I knew Sledge would have a still of that wall!

Notice that the etching of Anubis shows long hair, just like the statue. IT'S HIM! The only difference I see is that the statue is missing the ears. Perhaps there is some explanation for this. Perhaps the absence of the ears is a clue about the relationship between Anubis and Smokey. In the etching, Smokey appears to be menacing or perhaps judging Anubis, arching above and toward him, just as we have seen him do numerous times. Perhaps the Anubis statue's ears are laying down as a sign of respect or even submission to Smokey, but then why build a statue at all? Alternatively, perhaps Smokey is serving as Anubis's witness (i.e., his ears) on the island. I don't know why the ears are missing but everything else matches; the statue has to be Anubis.

It appears to me that Anubis maybe summoning the Smoke Monster in this hieroglyph. Maybe the Smoke Monser is summond by Anubis to do his bidding.

One thing I know for sure is that Anubis plays a huge role on the island, he might even be Jacob.
Anubis is the god that ferries souls to the underworld so if anyone has the power to delay a souls departure it would be him, which would explain why people who are dead keep appearing on the island.
As for smokey shapeshifting sounds good my only problem with this theory is that smokey tends to 'walk' in a straight line meaning he doesn't just appear behind you he would fly behind you, smoky clearly retreaded back to where ever the grate leads to, right before Alex Shows up. I believe smokey is some sort of servant of Anubis.
If anyone disagres I would happy with another point of view.

Smokey has a face because Smokey takes the shape of people, as we've seen with Yemi and now, Alex (and possibly other times but those seem to be the most prevalent). Yes, it does look a little demonic, but as Smokey appears to be a guardian of the underworld of sorts, it is fitting. Nobody's scared of a gentle monster.

Oh, and to answer chrisw79's question, since an ankh is the Egyptian symbol of life, an upside-down ankh would symoblize death, or in this case the underworld, which goes right along with Anubis and Smokey.

By the way, I also agree with Maxor127. I don't think the statue is Anubis, regardless of the fact that he's on an etching in the Temple catacombs. There's no correlation between the statue and drawings in Smokey's basement lair. Egyptians had many gods and the island, as we've seen, heals people so it's not all death and underworld.

my guess about smokey's weird face is that it is some kind of reflection of anubis, since the only images it ever seems to show are images generated from the viewers mind/spirit

lostfromthestart said:

Maybe that's the Eye of Mordor!

chrisw79 said:

In the top left, its clearly the eye of Ra.

Also, the smoke monster looks to have more of a devil/demon head, than a human head (the horns, the nose).

Also, is there significance to the inverted ankh?

Mrs Alpert said:

Yeah...weird that Smokey has a human face, not an animal face.

Blitz Wing said:

The top left does look like a UFO....either that or the Legion of Doom's ship, the Hall of Doom. LOL. (Superfriends)

I'm a naysayer still. It's still a big leap for me to say that the statue that looks nothing like Anubis from the back really is Anubis just because an etching of him appears in the creepy Smokey lair. They could be completely different gods representing different things. It's not like ancient Egypt was monotheistic. It makes sense for Anubis to appear in the underworldly smokey dwelling, but I'm still not convinced that the statue is Anubis. They both could represent completely different things.

If you look closely, Anubis has a smokey treat in his hand. That silly smokey will do anything for a smokey treat.

Still_lost06 said:

This is like solid proof that smokey goes waaaaay back. Maybe it really is a god?

awesome.

Sorry about the redundancy. posted just before I did!

It looks more like Anubis is offering peace.

Robs Lost said:

To me it doesn't look so much like Anubis is reaching out in an attempt to pet him because of the way his hand is facing upwards. This gesture looks more like a sign of peace, like when someone puts their hand out so a dog can sniff it first. Just a thought...

I think the top left along with the one right above the snakeon the bottom resemble eyes... Like we've never seen that before lol

Wow, I love this, I'm a believer, it's Anubis! What an awesome episode. It looks to me like Anubis is reaching his hand out to stroke the Cerberus, like a pet. 10!
