Did you wonder what happened to the plane after the odd assortment of O6ers flashed away? In "Namaste" we learn that plus a lot of other stuff. For one thing, we now know that Frank is the best damn pilot southwest of the Hudson. Also, we find out who the baby is, that Sun is really handy with a paddle, and that Dharma jumpsuits come in a wide variety of sizes.
Frank and the co-pilot chat up in the cockpit. Capt. Expendable mentions that he recognizes Hurley, and implies that he can't believe Hurley would tempt fate like that. On cue, the plane starts to shake, rattle and roll. Co-pilot hears Frank say "Oh no," and asks him "What?" Frank says, "Nevermind, you really don't have to know. Seriously, I'm not even going to waste the breath since they didn't even give you an actual name."
After the flash the plane emerges into broad daylight. Frank starts doing some fancy plane maneuvering stuff around mountains and saving (almost) everyone's behinds because really, no one else is as experienced at landing successfully on this island as he is. After the plane skids to a halt, Frank wakes up, notices ol' whats-his-name has been run through with a tree, and goes back to check out the other damages. The remaining passengers are starting to stir. Sun is still there, and she, Frank and Ilana take note of the non-prescence of Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid. Ben pops up and creeps the hell out of everyone, as he is wont to do.
Continuing with the trend of picking up where we left off in a different episode, we join the three O6ers back in 1977, at the impending reunion with Sawyer. He gets a bear hug from Hurley; a warm, sincere hello hug from Kate; and a polite "um, thanks for jumping out of the helicopter and saving us so I could take the girl you loved away and fool around with her for a while until I kinda screwed that up but then we did it the other night except now we're here with you so I guess we have to be rivals again" handshake from Jack. Sawyer can't believe Locke got them all back, but is saddened when Jack tells him John's dead. The subject of the Dharma jumpsuits comes up and Sawyer shows he's horrible at explaining time travel. "Dharma's not back. We're back. You know, back? Baaaaack! We went BACK. How are you not getting this?"
There's not a lot of time for discussion because they need to act soon or there's going to be trouble. Hurley mentions that Sun was also on the plane and Jin suddenly takes off for the Flame, because Jin is a Man of Action. See, someone who is not a Man of Action would be tempted to stick around and get a little more information about, say, whether or not the people traveling with his wife might have an idea where the plane was, or where exactly they all landed, and then discreetly go there to search. But not Men of Action: They charge away not knowing anything and burst into stations spouting crazy things about a plane crash to the very employees from whom they are trying to hide their friends. Way to go, Jin.
Juliet finds Sawyer rifling through their closet grabbing clothes, and he tells her "They" are back, and he needs do something with them. Juliet has an idea. At the Flame, Jin is annoying Radzinsky by interrupting him during The Muppet Show, and also by grabbing and fiddling with all his stuff. Radzinsky gets back at him by putting out a call to all the other stations to report in about any plane sightings. He knows nothing annoys a Man of Action more than having to patiently wait for information.
Meanwhile (give or take 30 years), Frank is gathering up his new batch of castaways and giving them the 411 about how they have no way to call for help. Caesar wants to know how an island with buildings and cages could be uncharted, and Frank is like, "Well, it's not on my chart because I don't have my pendulum handy. Also, have you ever tried charting a portable land mass? Didn't think so. Now get some firewood." Sun sees Ben slipping away from the group and follows him. He doubles back around and pops up suddenly, startling her, as he is wont to do. He says he is going to take a canoe to the main island and asks if she wants to go with him.
Juliet tries to sneak past the sleeping Amy to steal, er... rather, help her with the sub manifest. She sees Amy's baby and picks it up, cooing and rocking him gently. Amy tells her that they have decided to name him Ethan. Juliet gets a sudden and urgent case of the willies and hands the miniature future homicidal kidnapper/surgeon/plumber back to his mommy. Amy asks Juliet when she and Jim will have a baby and Juliet guesses "Maybe when a) I know being pregnant isn't terminal or b) when I'm fairly certain the child won't grow up to be someone I once slept with, then we'll talk about it."
Sawyer gets back to the gang and gets them all into some different clothes and tells them they will be posing as new Dharma recruits. Jin is still at the Flame getting nowhere on the plane search, but luckily is there to catch the alarm about a "hostile" inside the perimeter. Jin jumps into action (this time knowing where to go, thankfully) thinking it must be his wife. The intruder in question turns out to be Sayid, still handcuffed but mighty glad to see a familiar face. That is until, you know, Jin points a gun at him and threatens to shoot.
On the ride back to the barracks, Sawyer fills in the Future!Losties a little better on the whole time travel thing. Hurley reminds him that all the people Sawyer now works with are going to be wiped out, and Sawyer tells Hurley that Faraday has some ideas about that. Jack asks if Faraday is "here" and Sawyer says, "Not anymore." The audience says, "So now you're blatantly just trying to mess with us?" Sawyer says, "Pretty much, yes." They pull up to the welcoming center and Sawyer gives them some last minute instructions. Miles then pulls up behind them and is shocked to see the three friends. He gets his composure and tells Sawyer about the report of the hostile, so Sawyer calls Jin, who is able to fill him in on his discovery.
We jump to 2008 and Ben and Sun are kinda sorta arguing about whether to stay or whether to grab a canoe and start rowing back to the main island. Ben wins. Frank catches up to them and tries to talk Sun out of going, and refuses to go with them when she offers because he has to stay and take care of the n00bs. Ben approaches Frank and starts to lecture him, totally unnecessarily, about leadership responsibilities when Sun decides this little chat is over. She bonks him on the head with an oar. At this point it isn't clear what they do next, but it does seem strange that the outriggers are placed far from the crash site and any people, and it's broad daylight. Later in the timeline, Ilana points at two outriggers near the crashed plane and tells Locke "the pilot and some woman" took off in the middle of the night with one of those boats. Perhaps they laid low until dark before pushing off, but the other details are bugging me.
1977: Jack is interviewing with Pierre Chang and given his work assignment. Based on his "aptitude tests" he will be a workman. Chang says "That means janitorial work. Don't look so disappointed. Jeez, you're acting just like Roger did when we told him the same thing. But don't worry, just wait until you see how happy and fulfilled he turned out to be!" Kate is approached by Sawyer/LaFleur's lackey, Phil and he starts to get suspicious of her because her name is neither on the list, nor the sub manifest. Kate gives an excellent performance of looking "recently doped up" while she tries to figure out what to say. Then Juliet swoops in and saves the day with her list of "last minute additions." Phil leaves but the two women continue to pretend they don't know each other. Juliet's eyes look as if they are saying, "Keep away from my man." Kate's eyes respond, "Keep away from MY man." Juliet wonders, "Wait, which man are you talking about." Kate thinks "Jack. Who are you talking about?" Juliet thinks, "Oh, Sawyer. Never mind then."
Sawyer shows up at the Flame to figure out how to save Sayid. He keeps Radzinsky from shooting him, which is a pretty good start. Then, because he can't get rid of Radzinsky long enough to talk with Sayid candidly, he explains what's going on in the form of a Miranda rights-type speech. Sayid, being the hot Iraqi ball of awesomeness he is, understands and plays along perfectly. Sawyer wants to take him back to the barracks but Radzinsky insists on going with, and Sawyer loses a few points by not telling him he can't leave his post unmanned and making him stay.
Sun and Frank arrive at the Pala Ferry dock. She says she is doing this because Ben said it was the best place to look for Jin. Frank sarcastically quips, "Oh, I see, that's some advice you took before you whacked him in the head." Sun goes, "Well, duh. It doesn't make much sense to take advice from him after I whacked him on the head." As they enter the dilapidated barracks, a door slowly creaks open and Christian steps eerily from out of the dark. Sun asks about Jin, and he implores them to follow him. He brings them inside the present version of the welcoming center and pulls a photo off the wall of the Dharma Recruits of 1977. Standing smack in the middle of everyone is Hurley, Kate and Jack. Christian tells Sun that Jin is with them, and that they have a "bit of a journey ahead. " As he says this, the door opens by itself and black smoke is seen winding into the building. So it look like Sun and Frank are headed back to the 70's by Smokey Express. Also, there appears to be a mysterious figure hiding in the shadows of the room that has created quite a buzz.
From the picture of the recruits the scene shifts to the actual moment where the recruits are having the photo taken. Phil invites them to grab some punch and burgers when his walkie interrupts. It's Sawyer alerting him to the "14J" he's bringing in. Hurley, Kate and Jack see that Sayid is present and accounted for, at least for now. They take Sayid into a holding cell and Sawyer orders Phil to feed him.
Jack finds his way to Sawyers house and knocks on the door. When Juliet answers they hug. Right out there in the open for some reason. Jack thinks he has the wrong address but Juliet invites him in. Sawyer is in the living room reading a book and pulling on a cold Dharma beer. He offers Jack a beer but Jack turns it down. Yay! Good decision, Jack! However, from there the conversation goes downhill. Jack criticizes Sawyer for just sitting there reading instead of doing something about Sayid. Sawyer points out that running around willy-nilly like Jack used to do is what always went wrong with things and since Sawyer is the Winston Churchill of the island he will be thinking things through. Jack wonders, "Does that make me the General Patton of this scenario?" Sawyer tells him, "No. Go home."
The final scene begins with a boy walking into the holding area and telling Phil that he brought a sandwich for the prisoner. He asks Sayid if he wants mustard, and if he is a Hostile. Using the Socratic method, he asks the kid, "Do you think I am?" Using the Answer the Question with a Question method, the kid asks Sayid his name, which is really just a set up for the kid to tell us his name is Ben while he tries to make his eyes all buggy.
