Whenever the writers need to write a comical relief episode after something really bad happens, they make it about Hurley. The DHARMA van episode comes to mind here. We love to laugh at him sometimes too, especially when he is just clueless to some things, like when Kate finds out where Miles is being held from him. "Dude you just totally Scooby-dooed me didn't you?"

Hurley also appeals to our emotional side too, because he has been through so much tragedy on the island. He was captured by the Others and had to walk through the jungle by himself. He almost killed himself because he let his "friend" Dave convince him it was all a dream. His girlfriend died because he forgot the blankets for their picnic. His best friend Charlie died. He's been plagued by bad luck the entire show, and he somehow seems to pull himself through it. Even before he got to the island, the lottery numbers caused his life to be a mess. His grandpa died, his house burned down, his best friend ran off with his girl, and he was put into a mental institution. He sees dead people all the time that seem to make him morbid and even scared.

Sure, some of the other characters on the show have some of these aspects to them, but most of them have done some bad things either in their past or on the island. Kate killed her dad, Locked killed Naomi, Michael killed Ana Lucia and Libby, Charlie killed Ethan, Sawyer killed a man in cold blood. Jin, Sun, Ana Lucia, and Eko all had dark pasts. They all had their reasons, but does that make it right? That's where Hurley is different.

We love Hurley because all he wants to do is the right thing. He is always trying to help, even if he gets in the way. He doesn't like violence, and is pretty much the only lostie aside from Rose and Claire that hasn't fired a gun or thrown a knife at someone on the show.(Aside from an accidental flare.) One of my favorite Hurley moments is when he crashes into the Others on the beach with the DHARMA van, and saves Sayid, Jin, and Bernard. In "The Lie", we see his moral compass come out in full, when he tells his mother that they have been lying about how they got off the island. He was never happy about lying in the first place, and finally lets loose. His sincerity is obvious, and it convinces his mother that even though he sounded crazy, he was telling the truth.

This is why I believe that Hurley is the most likeable and funniest character on Lost. All summed up-Hurley rocks dudes!!
