5x06: The Lamp Post

5x06_lightpost_01.jpgThere is a lot going on inside the Lamp Post room, as we find in 5x06, "316". The room is largely occupied by a giant pendulum which swings over a map. This is used in conjunction with a formula scribbled on chalkboards to find windows allowing passage to the island. This room was built long ago, and was used by Dharma to find the island. The room also includes a chart of latitudes and longitudes that is constantly updating. Also, taped to the chalkboard is a photo of the island from 1954 belonging to the US Army. Jack is given a book of printouts detailing flights, including the now infamous 316 the O6 need to be on to return to the island. See pics of all this by clicking the continue reading link below!

Here's a thought on the backwards Latitude/Longitude... it's very vague, so bear with me, I'm still processing this thought myself:

Is it possible that we have some kind of "mirror image" shenanigans going on here?

Since this episode begins a nod to Narnia, as a huge Narnia Fan-Geek I can confirm that in the final book, "The Last Battle", people pass through a doorway into a new world (i.e. Heaven/ the afterlife) and everything in this new world is a mirror image of the old Narnia.

It's exactly the same, but kind of better and improved and eternal.... and mirrored.

Could this bizarre latitude/longitude paradox actually be the beginnings of a nod to such a "Mirror Image World"?

Forgive my ignorance if this makes no sense, I may be a fountain of knowledge on my favourite fictions, but science is far from my strong suit.... LOL.

That's what I want to know about.

I know this was mentioned before but no one commented
Prop error?? or part of the mystery
when they go into the room with the pendulum they show a board with latitudes and longitudes. but in this case it said longitudes on the left and latitudes on the right.
it showed the latitudes have a value of 158°39'17"
that is impossible. the longitude could have that but not the latitude
WTF???

Maybe Widmore used it to find the island this last time? He obviously knew that Hawking was there.

I love the nod to Narnia!!!! The Narnia series do have a sort of time travel, because the children go to Narnia (in LWW) and grow up, then arrive back home as children at the same age aas they left. I love the connection, though.

I wonder how the Others found the DHARMA outpost under the church.

I looked up the coordinated in Google Earth.

1) Middle of the Congo
2, 3, and 6) NE of New Zealand
4) SW of the Pitcairn Islands
5) In the Apataki Atolls (in French Polynesia)

I don't know if these have any significance, but I thought they would be interesting enough to post.

Still Lost and Ozma are both correct. The lamp post was taken to Narnia in The Magician's Nephew, which though written later in the series predates The Lion, the Witch and the Waredrobe in the chronilogical order of Naria. No... that has nothing to do with time travel, he just wrote them in a different order.

Ozma said:

The lamppost is a reference to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. The lamppost was the marker by which the children were able to get back into their world from Narnia. I wonder how many others caught this. So, the 6 are going back into their own world? Ozma

devenezy - thanks for a good laugh! Just a simple bookkeeping error...

I'm glad to see an explanation for the 'odd' occurrences on the island - an African plane & slave ship obviously imply the island shows up Atlantic at some point.

Sept. 23, 22...pretty close to the autumn equinox. Goes in with the whole planetary thing. Also a time of increased intuition and good for beginning new projects...like a new life on the Lost island?

So the dates Sep. 23, 22 of a given year seems to be significant. I thought that the last air date for LOST Season 6 was to be September ?, 2010 was announced as significant to the plot of the show. We'll have to keep an 'eye' on this. [Top Secret : Eyes Only]

I remember the lamp post from Narnia. For those who don't know, it was broken and brought along to another world (Narnia) and placed in the ground where it grew until it looked like it did before it was broken. It's in the C.S. Lewis' The Magician's Nephew. Wow I can't believe I remember that!

I added an image of the light post logo (at the top of the images above)

Wasn't it called the Lamp Post? Somone in chat mentioned a C.S. Lewis connection when they revealed that

Google Earth shows that the coordinates (34°03'00"N, 118°14'00"W) are not in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Rather, the geographic coordinates refer to a location in Los Angeles near ABC's studios at the intersection of E Temple St and N Vignes St. Google's street view shows two buildings at that intersection: 1) City of Los Angeles Personnel Department Building (http://www.lacity.org/per/psb/testmap.htm); and 2) Fukui Mortuary (http://www.fukuimortuary.com/index.cfm). Do either of these ring a bell for anyone?

Nicely put!
Also, it looks like Dharma had an interior designer from Carthage (or whatever people made the 4 toed statue). Notice the columns?

devenezy said:

The last picture has the Latitude and Longitude titles reversed. No wonder nobody can ever find the island. Does this mean that there is an alternate Earth with a sideways axis like the planet Uranus? Or is it the more likely answer of VERY poor editing? The editors need to pull their collective head out of Theranus.

I really need to watch this part again. I'm embarrassed to say that I missed part of it...I've let myself down.

Very interesting that the army photo is dated almost 50 years previous to the day of the Oceanic crash.
