What's Hot: 5x06: The Lamp Post
Thematic literary references related to LOST often pop up in the show. In "316", we get a long glimpse of Hurley reading a spanish version of "Y: The Last Man". The story is about "the only man to survive the mysterious simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. " Find more HERE. We also see Ben reading James Joyce's Ulysses on the plane. "Almost every variety of human experience is crammed into the accordian folds of a single day, which makes Ulysses not just an experimental work but the very last word in realism. " More on that one, HERE. Pics after the jump.

JMart: It says "El Ultimo Hombre", translated The Last Man, not "homage"...
the guys on back of mag look like the suit that the swan people wore when leaving the hatch
the front says 'the ultimate homage' now? alluding maybe to walt
When Jack asks Ben "How can you read?", he sarcastically answers "My mother taught me", an interesting reply given that we know she died giving birth to Ben.
Just wanted to mention that, in addition to the James Joyce novel being included for itself, the title comes from Graeco-Roman mythology and is an ancient story about a sailor who wanders for 20 years after the fall of Troy, until he finally comes home to Ithaka.
It's funny how Hurley bought all the standby tickets. Even though he bought them to protect the other people.
Right, my bad. So much going on I got a little confused...
Walt wasn't reading the comic book on the flight, Hugo was. Walt found it on the island after the crash.
I saw it as a little piece of the "recreation of flight 815" theme. Hurley reading the comic book is reminiscent of Walt reading his comic book (also in a foreign language) on the flight.
Hmm. While I agree that it was likely included because of Vaughn, I think you could make an argument that the plot of that volume has some comparisons to the show. (I'd explain more, but I don't want to spoil the comics.)
Nope, Damon and Carlton wrote "316" (this week's episode) and "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham." (next week's episode)
The comic book is just a shout-out to something that Brian has written other than Lost episodes.
or next week's...He's definitely written for the show before.
Because Brian K. Vaughn wrote this episode and that comic.
