What's Hot: 5x05: User Requested Images
Smokey made his first full-fledged appearance in season 5 tonight, showing himself to Rousseau's team. First, poor Nadine disappears, and then when they look for her Smokey blows up some trees (ahh, just like old times) and grabs Montan. But what's more important is that we learn that Montan lost his arm while getting pulled down into a smokey hole. We also learn that what Danielle called the sickness was in regard to Smokey, and whatever he did to the rest of the team that went into the tunnel to rescue Montan. Anyone think Dr. Chang lost his arm in a similar accident?
More images after the jump.

I wonder if we'll see all the dead people smokey dragged down the hole(s) inside the temple?
that is a foot. it's the guys foot ,Montaun. the only reason you can't see his leg is because its an action shot so it is moving too fast to tell. but it's his foot. sorry :(
I really want to believe that it has a mind of its own and it almost looked as though it was prowling around in front of Montaun, then rose and struck like a snake or something. But the mechanical noises are so obvious.
Westy185, I agree with you. Smokey is one of the most intriguing things to me on this show -- so clearly "otherworldly" and yet there's those darn mechanical-sounding chains clanking as if they're being wound up to pull him back in. I can't wait to find out more!
Still_lost06, I actually got cold chills with your last post... ewwwwww....
Never has Smokie seemed so mechanical. As it pulled Montaun into the ground it seemed exactly as if a chain was wrapping around him, and the chain was being camouflaged by smoke.
The sounds have always sounded mechanical to me - big, heavy machinery, lots of chains and engines.
Many have complained about the "supernatural" element of time-travel being confirmed this season, but I think more things are leading to technological/mechanical explanations for events on the show. In other words, nothing magical is happening. It's advanced, perhaps extraterrestrial technology.

Bastor, I definitely agree that the "It left, I need help!" voice was not really coming from Montaun... ****shudder**** ewwww creepy... Very Stephen King-ish...
So if Smokey/Cerberus is guarding the Temple then the Temple must have something to do with the underworld right? The dharma people named their stations with intent so by naming the security system Cerberus they must have had some knowledge of it and its purpose.
The Temple is supposed to be the "the last safe place on the island" so it would make sense to have something to guard it. I love LOST mythology!
I really felt as tho smokey was osme sort of bear...it sounded like it....then when it consumed the explorer it started...imitating his voice...im sure of it.
Gee Zeek what a buzz-kill! There were definitely "pictures" in earlier Smokeys (from Eko's past, etc.) so why not this one?
Sledge, You are probably right. It probably is a shoe in the third picture down. You just cant see the rest of the body and in my opinion, it kinda looks more like a thumb than a shoe. BUT, I will go with you on this one.
I think you're right Sledgeweb... it does look a bit weird though, as if there's white smoke coming up from the ground... debris, probably.
There is no hand and there is no 3-headed dog in the smoke. Humans look for patterns in nature and often see what we are looking for. It's a benefit of evolution (Happy Birthday, Mr Darwin!) that should benefit from a false positive. Wouldn't you rather be cautious because you thought you saw a man but it turned out to be a tree, than to have dismissed a dangerous man as a tree and walked on?
That last shot is a pictures of a tree flying straight up from the ground... like smokey just pushed the tree up with tremendous force and the whole tree, roots and all, just went flying up in the air. So, what you there under the tree there is the dirt and debris trailing from the tree. Otherwise, just a standard jungle shot.
What's that in the last picture of this post? i guess teh black part is the roots of the tree, how about the rest though?
And how did Robert known so much about the Smoke Monster? "It's a security system for the Temple"
OK we know they went into the hole after Smokey and got out since they were shot dead on the beach. Sure would like to know why Smokey let them go.
The dismemberment was nasty.
Technically he was there to keep the living out, and the dead in.
in myth wasn't Cerberus guardian of the gates of hades?
Still_lost06 -- no, it seems like Locke was being pulled down a hole in the ground... there were certainly no ruins of a temple in the vicinity. Methinks there are multiple Cerberus Vents around the island, as indicated on the blast door map...
It was kind of creepy how Smokey was slowly wrapping around the guy as it tried to pull him down the giant rabbit hole.
Is that the same hole Locke almost got dragged into?
blue, are you talking about the shoe sticking out?
OK, the fourth picture down clearly looks like a three-headed dog to me. Cerberus? (Did I spell that right? LOL.)
Yeah i think i saw that too. Danielle should have said that Montaun's arm lost his body instead though. lol
Why does it look like there is a hand in Smokey in the third picture from the top?? Any ideas?
