5x05: Hugo on the Radio?

normal_5x05-death-040.jpgThere is a quick scene in 5x05, "This Place is Death" that features Montan listening to a transmission of The Numbers on a radio. They make a plan to head to the radio tower to see if they can make use of the antenna to call for help. Those with sharp ears, however, recognized something familiar in the voice repeating 4 8 15 16 23 42 on the radio. Could it really be Hurley? Take a listen by clicking the Continue Reading Link below and let us know what you think in the comments section! Given Hurley's history with the numbers, and the incorporation of time travel into the fabric of LOST, it does make a certain sense. We've seen several times already, that events in the past happened because things were done involving time travel in the future that we previously weren't aware of. Could so much of what has now transpired on the island been due to Hurley himself broadcasting the numbers? Or, are people just hearing something that isn't there?

This isn't Hurley. On the episodes when the Losties find the transmission, it's the same person saying how many times the transmission has been playing.

Yeah, it sounds like hurley especially at the last two numbers, but how come...hurley wasn't on the island back then when daniel was still young, emmm.....

I think it sounds like Hurley, yes. Mostly on "23" and "42" ... the first numbers there's too much other noise to clearly make out that it's him.

I have to say though, he sounds depressed about saying those last couple numbers. I think if it is Hurley, he's completely reluctant about having to make that recording, just as he was about having to input the numbers into the Swan computer. But that he does it anyway because he knows that it's vital to making sure the "world" is saved.

'isnt the poiont of the show to try and stop the loops from happening?'

so, badrobot, your comment reminded me of one of my fave hurley quotes...'loop, dude. loop' except of course hurley was talking about being in the loop of information....or was he??
could that commment have a more significant meaning?

does it sound like 4 8 17 16 23 42 to anyone else but me?

Howdy - new to the board.
Just wanted to add that when I watched it LIVE I immediately thought it was Hurley. My wife then came in and I played it again and asked her who she thought the voice was and her immediate response was "Hugo"

Hurley on meds?

That kinda sounds like Richard to me.

I was thinking about this the other night. what if when the 6 get back to the island, they show up in the same point in time as where ever the people on the island are. so if they show up at a time when sawyer and them are in 1980 then they stay in 1980 with no more flashes. That could be why the transmission is Hurley.

It sounds more like Jack to me.
Anyway…

There was a theory floating around (maybe on this site) that Charlie knew the code in the undersea station (it was based on the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" if memory serves) because he, Charlie, had created that code at some point in the past, knowing that his future self would have to know the code at that future time. It also reminds me of Charlotte oh so conveniently wearing a bullet-proof vest when she got shot in the chest by Ben.

In other words, our Losties and the freighter people and perhaps others seem to be reliving these events over and over, perhaps in the hopes of getting them right this time. In other words, you can change time.

And this episode lends a whole new meaning to Daniel’s crying when he watched the wreckage of the supposedly fake plane in the Sunda Trench. And didn’t he ask Miles something like “are you sure you weren’t here before?” I’ve got to rewatch the sode.

This is when they're on the beach right? I also heard numbers as they were walking through the jungle. I think it was before Danielle's baby started kicking.

I have to say it doesn't sound like Hurley to me.

Although, it's a cool idea.

BobBaft said:

Lil, do you watch the freaking show?

They're time travelling, so when Hugo gets back (and the rest of the 6 don't make it) the island is still bouncing around in time. Hugo could easily show up years previous and change transmission to the numbers.

Yup, that sounds like me alright! ;)

It's totally Hurley.

I thought it would be the australian guy who offs himself. Remember the guy Hurley went to see in Australia? (not the one in the loony bin)

PARADOX!

They may have had him record the numbers, but frankly if it was him it was trying to disguise his voice. He found out about those numbers in Santa Rosa the first time and they were heard by his friend in Santa Rosa.

the wife confirmed that they had heard them before. not buying it was Hurley, but I do agree Hurley has a connection.

i agree with LYRIC... the first few numbers are garbled and unidentifiable, but the 23 and 42 DO sounds like Hugo. .... thats exciting and intertwineing... and it makes sense and its not somethign they would have had to rerelease any other episodes to match the voices because we never heard the numbers transmission. we've only heard Danilles. nicely done... makes sense that HE would be the one to say them.... but now in great LOST style... the question is WHY he elaves that trasnsmission in the first place... is he forced to for some reason,OR is it going to be anticlimactic and easy as an answer that he did it only because he had to to keep the space time continum correct. but either way what has happened has already happened. but also to be hoenst on a side note... isnt the poiont of the show to try and stop the loops from happening? has anyone else bea the LOST video game yet? the writeers of lost wrote the ending... so its a possibility of howit could end...

At first listen I thought no way, that is soooo not Hurley. But after listening a few more times I have to agree that 23 and 42 could be him! Still not so sure but I do know that if it is Hurley, that makes for a very interesting story line!!!

The_Hatch_Monkey said:

"23" is the only one that sounds like Hurley to me..."42" made me think "No, not him."

Opposite of what everyone in the comments below thought...

Floyd25 said:

It sound like Hurley to me after a second. OMG!!! That means Hurley goes back in time and records the numbers. SOoooooooo they're still jumping in time faor at least a bit when the get back to the island.

MachThree said:

Doesn't really sound like Hurley to me - it could just as easily be, say, Mincowski from the freighter's voice.

Lottery Ticket said:

42 is him

MrSocko said:

"23" and "42" definitely sound like him!

Wow. I guess this wouldn't be all that surprising considering what we've seen so far this season, but wow. Awesome.

imfromthepast said:

that does sound like Hurley, but I can't tell if it's because of the suggestion or not.

We do have a precedent however, the radio convo Boone had with Bernard.

AstroJones said:

it doesn't sound like Hurley at first, but when it gets to "23" and "42" it sounds EXACTLY like a monotone Hurley to me. I say yes, this is Hurley!
