As the losties began to flash through time on the island, the inevitable question of whether or not they could run into themselves starting popping up everywhere. "The Little Prince" answered that, as Locke caught a far off glimpse of the hatch light they he caused, and Sawyer watched the birth of Aaron take place at near arm's length (where Kate was present). I Think in the future we will see a lot more of this "McFly" phenomenon Flash backs leading to them helping their future selves. Maybe even discover they are the reason they were on that plane.
"I was looking through this site and started looking at the timeline. Between 1954 and 1964 (about 40 to 50 years ago), Adam and Eve died. That would make it about the time that the Losties are jumping back to. Any speculation to who they are now? "
I've always been of the opinion that "Adam & Eve" are supposed to be Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan.
I'm pretty other people have shared this theory and that there's some more in-depth [awesome] stuff to support it around here somewhere :) I'm just amateur Lost-Theoriser compared to some of the uber-geniuses around here... but...
Earhart and Noonan are thought to have gone down somewhere in the region of where our fictional story takes place. If you check out Amelia's Wiki, you can see a little map under the "1937 world flight" section:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Earhart
With that said, I would obviously just add that we don't know what time period the time-jumping will be confined to as yet so it's possible we might see Amelia and Noonan crash in 1937! That would be suuuuuupa kewl ;)
Getting to see [fictionally] how Amelia spent her last days. Maybe she made a real go of life on the island? :)
Ooh, I hope they do it. Can't wait!
This is probably not the place to put this, and this is probably very obvious to everyone, but.......

(i missed this weeks episode btw but will be watching tonight)
That's a good observation. Could it be possible that different parts of the island are moving through time at different rates? Maybe if it keeps doing so then it will be torn apart altogether.
I went back and watched the episodes from Season 1. Charlie and Jin were indeed there, but they were back away from Claire and Kate at the edge of the woods, and there were some scenes where you couldn't see them in the background. However, I noticed something MORE significant: Locke was not pounding on the hatch on the night that Aaron was born. He had carried Boone back to Jack at the caves, then he disappeared into the jungle and we saw him at the hatch with the light on. Then Jack sent Kate back to the beach to get Sawyer's alcohol, and when she got there it was morning... the sun was shining. On her way back she found Claire in the jungle, in labor, and she screamed for help. Jin heard her and came running. She sent Jin to the caves to get Jack, and that's when Jin found Charlie and they ran back to Kate and Claire. Then it got dark again and Aaron was born. So, 1 whole day had passed since Locke had been at the hatch. Maybe Desmond left that spotlight on all night? :-)
Here is something to chew on that I have been thinking about for a few days. In the first couple seasons, the Losties were seeing odd things and having odd interactions, particularly with animals. Kate saw a black stallion. Sawyer was "harassed" by a boar. Don't forget the instances where Walt was seen after he had been taken by the Others. All of these will probably be explained as time travel apparitions or effects. I don't like it but this is where the story-line is probably going.
November 1, 2004 - I am hoping someone reads these and can track down. I know that after the S1 ended and maybe in the DVD extras, it was reported that Sawyer was seen in the jungle during the birth of Aaron. I remember a thread board discussion about this as Sawyer was 'in two places' at the same time.
The significance in this episode might be that Sawyer needed his constant -Kate. We see that the nose bleed order skips him and goes to Juliet after Miles.
The 'search' light effect of the hatch is giving us a day and time relationship for time traveling Losties. Faraday asks "Do you know when we are?" to Locke. This is a question directed at the audience. Do you remember Season 1, because it matters.
I like the idea that skipping into the future might eliminate 'jet lag' effect of time travel, but I believe that Juliet's nose bleed disproves that theory. Charlotte wakes up and does not remember Faraday for a moment (Des like) which means she her mind was elsewhere, then see remembers. Maybe she skipped back to a time where Daniel professes his love . . say 1954. And now she's grounded.
jin and charlie were far enough away during aaron's birth that they didn't have to be seen. kate had told them to back away, they were in the area, but not watching or helping kate
"I think the really interesting thing is that apparently Kate and Claire didn't hear the noise/see the light. I feel that this is a huge piece of the puzzle, but can't fit it in right now."
That's because it's only our Losties who are skipping around in time. No one else on the island (at any time) is being affected by it. Even Richard told Locke that he (Locke) and his friends were the only ones being affected. He said that the Others didn't dissapear - it was Locke himself who vanished from their midst.
Our surviving Losties and Freighter Folk who are still on the island, are the only ones jumping through time. Everyone else is unaware that anything is happening unless they happen to meet the time travellers.
Not all of the jumps have been to significant time periods.
"I'm kinda surprised we didn't hear Locke yelling at the hatch. He was pretty confused back in season one. Some of that has changed."
Did you see how far away the light was from where they were? I would have been shocked if they could have heard him through that jungle.
Locke didn't want to head toward the light because he didn't want to risk changing anything that happened. As he said, he needed that pain.
And it's unclear he could have changed anything even if he did run into himself. As Mrs. Hawking told Desmond, you can't change the past... and the universe has a way of 'course-correcting' itself.
"If Sawyer tried to talk to Kate - she would just hear voices in the jungle...? My first post here...hope it's right..."
The only problem I have with that is that they had no problem talking to the Others in the past. Why would Locke be able to talk to past-Richard, but Sawyer couldn't talk to past-Kate?
I think he just waited to long to decide whether or not he should try talking to her. He was probaly trying to figure out exactly where he stood with her at that point in time.
But I could be wrong, and I'm not trying to discourage anyone from brainstorming on this stuff!
In the original scene Jin and Charlie were also there to witness the birth of Aaron. Why are they not in the flashback? Is that on purpose? It seems kind of a big thing to leave out when they know the viewers obsess about things like that.
One idea - let me know what you guys think. We have kept hearing voices in the forest from the beginning. What if the voices you hear are actually other people in different times. Maybe when you are jarred from the island you can see the record - but cant interact with it. If Sawyer tried to talk to Kate - she would just hear voices in the jungle...? My first post here...hope it's right...
They came across the light being on; that's all we know. We assume that Season 1 Locke was still sitting on top of the hatch at that point, but none of us know how long he stayed there, or how long Desmond kept the light on. Season 5 Locke was taking his best guess that his earlier self was there, which is why he re-routed.
Honestly, I don't know what to make of the fact that they can run into their former selves. Sure, we can believe that because we didn't see any doubles in the first four seasons, that it "can't" happen, that the past cannot be changed as Daniel, Pierre, and others have stressed. But we've already witnessed one instance (Daniel/Desmond) where someone did change the past, and another (Jin/Rousseau) that may possibly be changing the past.
So who knows? I kind of think that the traveling Losties could interact with the early Losties without causing any complications, by assuming the identities of their earlier selves. We may come to find out that some interactions we saw during the past 4 seasons were not the present-day Losties but actually their future-traveling selves.
I'm kinda surprised we didn't hear Locke yelling at the hatch. He was pretty confused back in season one. Some of that has changed.
It's getting more obvious now that some sort of intelligence is directing the time skips. They either witness significant events or become part them. So far, they haven't just popped up on some ordinary Thursday.
Also significant in this episode is that we've been shown a jump to the future from the point in time the freighter blew up.
jmm, he actually only changed his route to the beach. Remember, the idea was to go back to the beach, get their little motor boat, and go around the island to where the Orchid is. When he saw the light, he took a different route to the beach, but they still ended up at the beach without any major incidents.
It's a pretty thick jungle. I don't find it that interesting the Claire and Kate didn't see the light from that far away.
What I'm curious to find out is what significant event is going to happen because Locke decided to change his route after seeing the light. Example: Richard meets future Locke in 1954 and because of this encounter meets him as a child and Locke becomes the leader of the Others in 2004. Would this have happened if future Locke never told Richard to look him up after he was born? Same situation is happening now. After seeing the flash of light from the hatch, Locke decided to change his route to the Orchid. I wonder if anything significant will happen because of this event (more significant than being shot at by the other boat).
I think the really interesting thing is that apparently Kate and Claire didn't hear the noise/see the light. I feel that this is a huge piece of the puzzle, but can't fit it in right now.
IMHO - They can't because they didn't.
It seems interesting that people seem to have this innate sense that leads to them wanting to avoid what their former selves. A reason, or just a way for the show to be able to avoid "Back to the Future" paradox problems?
Yup, they both occurred on day 41.
I will be very impressed if we go back to the original scene of Clair having the baby and see Sawyer standing in the background...
I don't remember lock seeing the light and claire having the baby so close together?
