5x01: Daniel's Journal

5x01_journal1.jpgTonight we managed to get a few shots of Daniel's Journal again. Several of the pages look similar to the ones we saw last year, and they mostly appear to contain equations.

This is why I love this website, your speculations make so much sense. I pity the people that don't read this site - LOST must be so much more confusing for them.

Everything I was gonna say has already been said here. Spot on.

Hi all, my first post so hope it makes a bit of sence, as i think you guys are well out of my league! :o)

When Dan is talking to Sawyer by the hatch in S05E01 he says that everything he knows about Dharma is from "this journal" as stated below, but whats not to say this journal is from Dharma, after all he was there when they found the wheel under The Orchid station.... this also supports the theory that Dans is another one who is "special" when it comes to hopping around in time...

Wow you guys are good!!!
I totally believe that the journal may have been found as opposed to Daniel actually owning it, espicially since we now know that Daniel was on the island in the past!!!

good catch impossiblefunky!

I think changes can be made, but it's dangerous to do so (butterfly effect) and that Daniel probably told Sawyer that just to prevent him from damaging the future.

Also if you can't change things, then how is locke able to relate to Richard that he is going to be shot and in need of assistance in the future?

Did anyone notice that the "Desmond Hume is MY constant" message changed pages?

Also, in regards to the journal, I'm not sure if it's his or not. I have a hunch, though, that Daniel has more things in there than calculations. Maybe he has actual notes of events that have or are about to happen.

Like, when Charlotte came to meet him at the beach. Before he starts talking with her, he refers to the journal to check on something. Maybe he has an actual account of what's happening and when it's supposed to happen... Reaching? Probably. But it might be a valid place to reach.

Also, if the journal isn't Farraday's, maybe it belongs to the guy who fixed Locke's leg (I forget his name). He seems to know intimate details about events on the island (like John's injury).

Maybe, as I guess String Theory dictates, time is linear and unchangeable. Maybe the entire story is dictated in the journal to some extent. Maybe that's why Farraday has so much faith that the answer lays inside.

In response to Lyricc96:

The point of present day exists with Desmond sleeping on the boat. That's as far as the "natural" timeline has extended. That's the furthest, most recent point in time. Nothing later than that has happened yet.

Daniel said that Sawyer talking to Desmond was no use because it couldn't change what had already happened in the natural course of the timeline (ie. the helicopter, the explosion). Sawyer wanted to change the past. I guess String Theory won't allow it. What has happened has happened.

Farraday spoke with Desmond, not to change what has happened in the past, but to affect the future, and the events that can potentially happen beyond the present day point of Desmond sleeping on the boat.

Correct me if am wrong, but they never refer to it as Daniel's journal. When he refers to it, he says "the journal" not "my journal" which leads me to believe it's not written by him, but rather that he came across it somehow and then added his notes.

Well, at least they did make a nod to the prior meeting that Des and Dan had at Oxford, which was nice as far as I'm concerned. I was thinking that this might be why Desmond is Dan's Constant, as some of you are as well it seems.

Lyric-I think that Dan was able to talk to Desmond to get him to do something in the future because of Desmond's previous travels through time (his conciousness), and because Desmnd found his constant.

I thought he was looking for Charlotte's constant. I think that asking Desmond to go to Oxford to contact his mother somehow can save Charlotte. There is some talk that Mrs. Hawking is Daniel's mom. But I am not so sure, as Mrs. Hawking seems to be near Ben in LA. (within 3 hours drive) In the upper right hand corner of the last image is that 'home' symbol. It also appears in the hatch painting.

Lyricc96 said:

Also, with Desmond being his constant is that why he could talk with him at the hatch without "changing time"???

He wanted to look up the effects time warping may have, like the bleeding nose and headaches.

Well as he wrote in the notebook last season, and we see it again on the page in the bottom picture, Desmond is HIS constant if anything goes wrong.

Desmond is the one who can help him anchor himself - and hopefully the rest of the group - before they suffer any ill affects of being unstuck in time. Charlotte is already being affected.

What do you suppose Daniel looked up in his notebook before he went back to the hatch to try to communicate with Desmond?
