5x01: Frozen Donkey Wheel Strikes Back

5x01_dharmaWheel2.jpgTonight, we got to see Pierre Chang venture into the Orchid, back during the Dharma heyday when the Orchid was still being constructed. It seems an accident happened when they hit the chamber where the frozen donkey wheel resides. The images after the jump are the sonar imaging of that chamber and the donkey-wheel. There appear to be lots of numbers on the paper, but they are meaningless and random as far as I can tell. IF you see something we don't, let us know!

People at some point in time must have been able to access the frozen cave and put the wheel there.

Maybe the island has traveled through time and space before, and the Black Rock (the ship) was stranded in the middle of the island when the island appeared after shifting.

Maybe the wheel is older than the whole island.

I also see that in the sonar/xray images, the pic is taken from BEHIND the donkey wheel!! Shouldn't the image show the tunnel that leads to the secret room?! Maybe they decide not to continue construction of the time box at that location. I'll have to check the end of season 4 to see where it is in respect to the elevator shaft.

We know the wheel has ability to allow the island to shift through time and space, in a glowing white light. We also know that when Desmond activate the key in the hatch's failsafe, the same white light enveloped Desmond, and he began to shift through time.

The two mechanisms are definitely connected to the same power source, with the failsafe exposing Desmond to a lesser degree than the donkey wheel to the island's survivors.

Maybe the worker went crazy like the time-travelling dude (Fisher stevens)on the freighter. The closer to the power source he got, the more the time-shifting effect would affect the worker.

Don't know about the drill bits, though.

What about the fact that the drill bits kept melting and someone operating the drill when crazy?
Somehow Dharma gets through and manages to build the time machine at the entrance to the tunnel.

I was also thinking the FDW looked alot like an old sailing ship's wheel too, Blackrock related or not.

I don't think you mean sonar? But ground penetrating radar? I think that you can tell it is in a cavern of sorts.

Maybe the island IS the black rock. The wheel resembles one that you'd use to steer an old boat. Probably wrong, but it's an idea.

So, the frozen donkey wheel was "discovered" not built by Dharma!? The island DOES have a rich history. I wonder who did build it. Any thoughts?

I'm pretty certain the numbers are just indicators of the number of feet, i.e. how far in the image is.
