CastawayCayley's Favorite Finale Moments

4x13Review01fixed.jpgThere was so much to talk about in the finale of Season Four that I didn't know where to begin. It wasn't a perfect episode, but all in all I really enjoyed it. So I finally decided to narrow down what I wanted to say to a list of my favorite ten scenes. You may agree with some or all of these choices, or you may think I must have watched a completely different show. After the jump, you'll see what I considered the highlights of all three parts of "There's No Place Like Home."

4x13Review02.jpg10. I have been really interested in Daniel's story ever since he landed on the island in a tie. (Seriously. A tie?) Also I think he and Charlotte make an adorable couple. I just really liked this scene because it seems like a precursor to a story that I want to see evolve next season. This sweet, and slightly awkward, goodbye gives me hope against the idea that Daniel and his merry boatload of redshirts have been left behind by the island. I can only cross my fingers that it doesn't become a long drawn out saga of "I'll get back to you, Penn- I mean Charlotte!" Because that's been done before. Like, a lot.

4x13Review03.jpg9. Between the original airing, repeat showing, research for articles and posts, and transferring both the regular episode and the enhanced one to DVD, I must have watched Part One probably more than eight times. And every single time I see the look on Hurley's face when he runs to his mom, it makes me tear up. It's just so heartwarming that I almost forget that these people aren't really real.

4x13Review04.jpg8. Oh, how I waited to see meany Keamy beat to a pulp, and who better to do so than Sayid and his Ankles of Justiceā„¢? The fight was short, and unfortunately did not involve some kind of decapitation ninja move, but our favorite under-used hero on this island kicked some mercenary tuckus. Sure, he may have looked like he was on the verge of having his windpipe crushed, but if Richard hadn't stepped in and ruined it with an obviously ineffective shot to the bullet-proofed mid-torso, I'll bet Sayid would have pulled out Keamy's intestines with his teeth and a spork, am I right? Or delusional? Either way, this was a nice bit of action.

4x13Review05.jpg7. This was a pretty good stunt, as far as I'm concerned. I know some shows do stunts much bigger and more elaborate, but this couldn't have been easy on that stunt man. Story-line-wise I loved this moment because it was very dramatic. The moments leading up to it were tense, the helicopter needing to drop weight meant someone had to go. I imagine if I were Sawyer, looking around at these other passengers, the choice was obvious. He loved these people, and he wanted to see them safe. He may have thought they would be able to come back and get them, but probably not since he said what he did to Kate. He knew his friend Hurley was thinking it was his fault they were in peril, and just as Jack knew Sawyer would protect Kate at the Barracks, now Sawyer knows that Jack will get Kate off the island. I guess I'm just a sucker for selfless acts of heroics.

4x13Review06.jpg6. Ever since last season's "Par Avion", I, and probably many of you, have been dying to know if Jack ever finds out about his half-sister. This season they have sneakily throwing out a teaser or two to drive me crazy. What does "you're not even related to him" mean? Does it mean you were going to say, "but I am"? Well, now I know. And the scene where he hears the news from Carole gave us just the amount of Jack-having-his-mind-blown action that the writers love to give Matthew Fox.

4x13Review07.jpg5. I am not normally all that invested in the romantic angle of this show. But the scene earlier this season where Desmond spoke with Penny on the phone was really quite touching. To finally see Desmond's face when he lays his eyes on Penny, like he didn't dare believe it, was a powerful moment. It also wrapped up a really long ongoing storyline, which, as much as I love Desmond, was also nice to finally have over. Now we'll have room to wrap up some even better storylines, right writers? That doesn't mean I hope the story is over for the couple. I look forward to seeing if, and how, Team Penmond (Desmelope?) factors into the next few seasons.

4x13Review08.jpg4. Sun walking into her father's office and putting him in his place got a huge cheer out of me. We have seen her tough side come out even more over the years, and it's been refreshing. In this scene we see that she's not just tough, she is angry. She is ready to make people pay for what has happened to her, and with her settlement money she knows that the first step to this battle is Paik Heavy Industries. Who does she set her sights on next? Widmore? Ben? Someone even more evil? I can't wait to see where this goes.

4x13Review09.jpg3. Hey, it's not a Lost season finale until something blows up! I especially liked that second before the explosion with Christian and Michael. I don't say that because I liked seeing poor Michael die, but because of the way Christian was suddenly there. Either he can apparate like a Hogwart's graduate or he is a ghost. Then, as the helicopter rose, and Jin ran after it, and the boat went boom; my heart broke. And then Sun's reaction shattered it. Oh, Emmy people? Yunjin Kim had better be nominated, that's all I'm saying. I guess I could nitpick about the CGI explosion looking fake, but I'm not that type of viewer. The point to me is that it happened, and that it so greatly affected those who flew away.

4x13Review10.jpg2. It took a year to find out who was in this bloody coffin so chances were good I was going to love this scene just for the sheer getting-it-over-with factor. But to discover Jeremy Bentham was Locke was a great twist. I had come to believe that Locke would only be removed from the island by prying his cold, dead body from it, but now it seems instead that his cold, dead body needs to be brought back. And despite the idea of Lost turning into Weekend at Benry's, I really want to see how they plan to pull off this caper.

4x13Review11.jpg1. They moved the island. They moved. The. Island. Oh, and also? They moved the island! Whether it was done with a button, a lever, or a Dance Dance Revolution platform, the fact remains that they moved the island. I love the wheel because it seems like the perfect mix of something that may have been around for a long time and something that can only exist in one's imagination: it's old world meets out-of-this-world. I started watching this show on the day it started because it was about plane crash survivors. If someone had told me then that it was also about an island that could teleport, time-traveling bunnies and mystical invisible leaders, I may have laughed it off. But now it makes perfect sense, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

This past season has definitely been my favorite. I think the decision by the writers and producers to give themselves an end date was the best thing they did for the show since adding the character of Ben. Now I know that when they add an element to the story that they will see it through. It no longer has that feeling of a plotline stretching out ad infinitum because they don't know where the show might go. I also think the truncated season due to the writer's strike gave the show a quicker feel that I hope continues on into next season. This finale had the right mix of answers and cliffhangers, and I don't feel as frustrated by it as I have in past finales. I have renewed faith in this show when it returns in Season Five. I don't like how long I'll have to wait until then, but I guess I will just have to be patient.

Excellent article, Cayley! You should be a professional reviewer for TV Guide or EW or something (if you aren't already.) Great writing, great count-down system of organization, great screen caps, and great choices for top scenes. Any true Lost fan would love your article!

By the bye, I vote for Desmelope. ;-)

I'm fixed on Daniel's story too! Very interesting! Sawyer's Leap of Love was fantastic. I think it's a little gimicky in a good way, to get us to see through the sarcasm and sweet made up names... is a heart o' gold ;) And #5 is SOOO right on. As much as I love em... I'm happy all that is over. Yay Team Desmenlope. Now go make time traveling wealthy babies. Sun is fierce, and is just exciting to watch. Weekend at Benry's is hilarious and so is all the pictures you chose to put in this story. I love it and hope to see more of your stuff in the future! Nice job CC!

Great job, Cayley!! Your top ten can not be argued with! I add one more for my top eleven... Sun looking up Widmore. I can't wait to see where this will lead. Sun has really developed as a force in four years!!

Cayley-

Well, we touched on similar topics, but with different camera angles. ;) I loved the countdown effect.

I can't believe you were not invested to Desmond and Penny? tee hee...

I agree a more kick your butt scene with Sayid would have made many more happy!

Fantastic article! Lots of pictures - whoo hoo! I completely agree with you. When you realize that episode was the length of most feature films, it really staggers the imagination that it was all done on a tv production schedule.

My moment number 11 was Kate BACKING UP to tell off Jack. Go Kate!

But...what did you mean when you said you sometimes forget that they are not real people? huh?

Thanks Suzanne.

Good point LB. I mentioned it briefly in #3 but I should have expanded on it.

Awesome Cayley! The only thing I might add was the scene where Sun is ripped from Jin. That was soooo moving to me! So, basically, I would have to have 11 moments.
