This week we received a more laid back episode of Lost compared to last week's thrill a minute "The Shape of Things to Come". "Something Nice Back Home" gave us a more personal look at the lives of the Losties and started to set up the season finale. We learned that Jack and Kate did finally end up together. It does not appear that the happiness lasts very long. Kate and Jack episodes usually bring the most varied reactions. This episode was no difference. It was rated from scores of 1 to 10, with 69% giving a rating of 7 or higher with an average of 7.1. Overall it earned a positive rating but SWLS users saw the episode in very different light. We will discuss both positive and negative reactions plus give my review of the episode.
Staggerlee liked the episode because it "had a laid back quality to it." KoKonut agrees with an 8 rating stating "it had a weird creepy feeling to it." Firemanandlostfan states the feelings of many with his discussion of Hurley and Christian's appearances. He thought the creepy factor gave him "goosebumps". He added "Wow is all I can say". Most people enjoyed the Hurley and Jack scene the most. It added to the mythology of the show and brought many questions. Is Charlie (through Hurley) and Christian going to lead the Oceanic 6 back to the island? Is Hurley just crazy? Will Jack ever believe anyone? Other SWLS users liked to see Bernard get involved and Rose showed some spunk this week.
MichaganFan was not thrilled believing that "Home" did not "have a lot of substance". Lostatsea was of the same mindset, that "not really much was given to us". Hatch4815162342 was right in line calling it"one of the lamest moments of Lost'. Jack and Kate centric episodes always bring the largest discrepancies of any episodes. They are either loved or hated. Kate centric "Eggtown" also earned a large range of emotions. It appears that the more Sci-Fi focused fans do not enjoy these character based episodes.
Every episode of Lost can not be a shoot em up action packed thriller. The show is primarily about the characters, not "time travel', "teleportation" and wars. Yet when ithe writers focus on the characters, it automatically draws many complaints. This episode moved the story along and put the pieces in place for the season finale. We got a clearer view of how Jack becomes the mess we saw at the end of season 3. We know that "visions" of Charlie and Christian are playing an important role in the continuing story. Charlie is going to be a major influence on the Oceanic 6 trying to get back to the island. We had a glimpse of the start of Claire's fate. I was very happy to see an end to the Jack and Juliet potential romance. A love quadrilateral or pentagon is just to much for me. The biggest reveal was that Sawyer chooses to stay on the island and that he is alive when the Oceanic 6 leave the island. I know that Alwayslost was ecstatic by this huge reveal.. "Something Nice Back Home" may not lead to must repeat viewings, (except for a couple of choice scenes, CowboyUp knows what I am talking about) but it served its purpose and served it well.

I got quoted! WOO HOOO thanks Jug!!!
I happen to enjoy character-driven stories. I am glad to see Kate and Jack together, becasue I do not like the "now -I-love-him or her- now I -don't" stories. Love is. You cannot change it like you change your socks.
It's not that ut and dry.
I like the character-driven stories. I just don't like the characters of Kate and Jack, and they are responsible for a lot of episodes dragging on and on.
Your last para-g there says it all...Characters, the rest is dressing...like yummy spicy ranch dressing on a wedge o' iceberg...without the lettuce, it's just a blob on the plate.
Agree is good the end has been put to the lovey dovey triad (we hope) was ended in a rather cool, original (for TV) manner ta'boot.
As the Great Lak put it, we've more links in the chain.

Kate makes me feel kinda funny...Like when we used to climb the ropes in gym class!
By the way, great write-up, Juggy.
I like Sayid's character-driven stories such as his first few flashbacks. Those were almost entirely character-driven. I do not like the pansy romance stories that are becoming more and more prevalent in the last season or two. Character-driven romance stories is the main reason I didn't like the first part of S3. The only real episode I liked in the first part of S3 was Sawyer's episode, and I believe it was nearly entirely character-driven. However, it was not a bunch of romantic crap where the main character cries half the time.
That's all I'm sayin' ;)
"Yet when the writers focus on the characters, it automatically draws many complaints."
Sad state of affairs.
This episode put more links in the chain. Lost is more concerned with character than story. It always has been. Thank God, it appears that it always will be. If this had been the last episode of the season, I could understand the complaints against it. But it was an intelligent and mature story, geuninely interested in Alice in Wonderland's question, "Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle."
Thanks for the write-up, Jug.
