On May 9, Matthew Fox will star in the cartoon classic Speed Racer. Larry and Andy Wachowski, of The Matrix trilogy fame, direct the story of Speed Racer and the mysterious Racer X. This promises to be a stylistic and revolutionary visual live action movie. Speed Racer must team with Racer X to win the difficult cross-country race called The Crucible. This is the same race the killed Speed Racer's older brother, Rex Racer. Matthew Fox (Racer X) is joined in the movie by Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer), Susan Sarandon (Mom Racer), John Goodman (Pops Racer) and Christina Ricci (Trixie). Speed Racer is getting a big budget advertising campaign and it comes with high expectations. Larry and Andy Wachowski have plenty riding on this film. Since the Matrix series has ended, their film career has been in neutral. Their last major film, "V for Vendetta", grossed 132 million worldwide. This does not constitute a bomb, but was not the blockbuster they were hoping to achieve. Speed Racer is a very colorful comic bookish film with the Wachowski's style stamped all over it. It may have only a cult following. On an interesting side note, stories of Larry Wachowski dressing as a woman have been circulating for the last couple of years. The Wachowski brothers deny that Larry is under going a sex change operation.
Matthew Fox's performance in Speed Racer is also important to his film future. His ensemble movie "Vantage Point" did moderately well at the theaters. Since the February 22, release, Vantage Point has taken in $70 million dollars. Not a blockbuster by any means. The website rottnetomatoes.com has an average rating of 5.1 out of 10 by its members. It received 49 good reviews and 86 rotten ones. If Matthew Fox wants to become a movie star, he needs Speed Racer to be a big success or to chose better films in the future.

I am so excited that this is rated PG and we can take the kids. That's a smart move on the producers' parts.
I saw the preview and it looked like an acid flashback. Just kidding but it has some damn good actors in it and it's by the Wachowski brothers so it's got some merit to be a pretty decent movie. I haven't seen vantage point but heard good and bad. I guess I'll have to get rolling on this during the hiatus.
