4x09: To the Ben Cave

caveGlyphs_01.jpg In 4x09, "The Shape of Things to Come", Ben plays a gamble with the life of his "daughter", Alex, and loses. Shocked (that the "rules" have changed), Ben hurries into his secret room, and then opens another secret door revealing some kind of ancient cave complete with hieroglyph like drawings (remember the hatch timer?). Moments later, the Smokey Train arrives to wipe out the bad guys. It looks like Ben has some ability to control smokey, who might be native to the island? We still don't know exactly what smokey is though. WHAT IS SMOKEY!? Follow the link to get a better view.

I'd Like to know how the hell Ben has all of these crazy martial arts skills all of a sudden...when he kills the two middle east guys

Sure it could be dirt on Ben, but think about the mechanical noises that smokey makes. It's just something to ponder anyway.

I agree with Captain Falafel (and love his name!) that Ben's conjuring of Smokey reminded me more of Locke in his sweat lodge with the funky mud than of someone cranking a big lever.

I just hope the death of Karl, Alex and the apparent death of Danielle is not an indication of the writers trying to sneak away from having to explain what the hell happened with Rousseau, her team, and the so-called SICKNESS.

When a 'soiled' Ben emerged from the Ben Cave, I assumed that Smokey was raised and released by some sort of ancient ritual involving rubbing that sweet island essence on himself and no doubt some speaking in tounges and maybe even some snake handling. This, to me, proves that Smokey is some sort of supernatural entity and not a mechanical one since mechanical implies its a man made thing made up of moving parts that can be worked on with tools by a man.

Also, the fact that Ben said to ask Jacob about what it was only cements my speculation, since old Jake subscribes to the Ted Kasinsky philosophy of loathing technology. Thoughts?

Interesing drawings on the door - a figure holding a cross,a fish, a cross (Christian symbology), another figure with right arm extended, a pot or bowl. Below the figure with the cross is what looks like either a flame or a bear's paw. To the left of the fish looks like a bagua from the DHARMA symbol - three lines atop each other (heaven, travel, head). The way the door is carved reminds me of Mayan glyphs.... which would mean the three lines represent 15 :-)

It would be interesting to see better resolution of the door, if possible.

The whole cave scene with the petroglyph ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroglyph ) reminded me of the episodes leading up to the finale of Twin Peaks ( http://www.glastonberrygrove.net/mythos/images/owlmaplg.gif )

You will also see on there a couple of farmiliar 'logos'such as 'the flame' and two or three that resemble the new 'orchid' logo too.

Twin Peaks was always about the struggle between good/ evil, black/ white (lodges) and Lost certainly seems to be going along a similar tangent.

That looks like the door to Diagon Alley. Lol.

I found it interesting that when Ben came out from summoning Smokey he was covered in grease or oil like a mechanic. However he goes about releasing it appears to be a mechanical thing.

the alex death was shocking. I bet she returns at some point though (like if a time travel situation occurs) either that or the actress was getting too old too quick!
