Review: The Other Woman

I am pretty certain that I have made mention of the fact a number of times that I love this show. I buy into it hook, line and sinker. I don't think I've ever rated an episode any lower than a 6 or 7, and this episode is no different. I've been poking around the internets looking at reviews and of course reading the opinions and thoughts of our esteemed users here at Sledgeweb, and from what I can tell, the viewers of "The Other Woman" give it a resounding "meh."  The majority of us were not blown away by this particular installment. I enjoyed it; it was an episode of Lost, after all. It wasn't my least favorite episode of the season, but it wasn't my favorite either. More of my thoughts on this episode after the jump.
4x06 focused on Juliet. In the present time she is sent by one of the Others to track down Charlotte and Daniel in order to stop them from completing their mission. She is led to believe they intend to do harm to the people on the island and that she should be prepared to do whatever is necessary. We also see in flashbacks that the previously seen relationship she had with Goodwin was actually an adulterous affair. In this week's subplot, Ben is still manipulating Locke by doling out tiny bits of information, and getting bonus rewards for doing so.

We are introduced in this episode to Harper Stanhope, the Others' resident therapist, and apparently shrewish wife of Goodwin. At the beginning of the second segment of the episode, Harper tells Juliet that Ben is "exactly where he wants to be." That's the third time that phrase has come up this season. They have to be repeating it for a reason and I am itching to find out why. There may also be something to this new characters name. "Stanhopea" is a type of orchid that is especially known for its "complex and usually fragrant flowers that are generally spectacular and short-lived."  Interesting... maybe. Her appearance to Juliet is also quite creepy. It is accompanied by whispers, full of mysterious information -- how did Ben get his message to her, and why wouldn't he just send Harper to do the deed - and punctuated with her seemingly impossible disappearance. When we see her in her office she has a lot of diplomas and certificates on the wall, including one that has a Hanso Foundation logo in one corner. Does this mean Harper is associated with the original pre-purge Dharmites, like Ben was?

Of course there were other questions raised this episode. They are the supersize fries that come with every episode. They are inevitable. Besides the ones we got that are associated with Harper, we have the map that Daniel and Charlotte were using. Who made that? Was it someone who has been on the island previously? Who does Juliet look like that would cause Ben to become obsessed? When Ben asks if Juliet realizes what he had to do to get her to the island, what does he mean? Was she picked for what she can do or for whom she looks like? Can you really tell that one set of tracks in the jungle were made 30 minutes before another set of tracks?

We did get some answers this episode. Okay, we got one answer. We can officially now say that the freighties are working for Charles Widmore. I will admit that when I heard this I said, "Yes! I knew it!" But then I realized, of course I knew it. It was actually kind of obvious. The way Frank and Daniel looked at each other when Desmond said "Penny Widmore", the fact that Naomi had that picture of Des and Penny; it wasn't a big reveal of an answer. At this point I'm just happy that they at least gave any answer, instead of just piling up more questions. Another obvious thing we "learned" was that anytime anything potentially deadly needs to be deactivated, there is no way it will be possible to beat the device until exactly one second is remaining on the countdown.

So, all in all, I felt this was a solid episode in a stellar show. I look forward to savoring the last two episodes before the next hiatus, and can't wait to see how the truncated end of the season plays out.
