4x07: Ji Yeon: A Review

03182008a.jpgLast week's episode of lost, Ji Yeon, had us following Sun and Jin in an interesting flash-forward/ flash-back combination episode. We watched as Sun, screaming for Jin "Michael Style" had her baby in an obvious flash-forward as Jin ran around the city buying panda bears, breaking his cell phone, and threatening to kill cab stealers. To put it simply, while watching this episode live I was underwhelming with the plot and soap opera-ish style that never really got me excited for the whole hour. However, in hindsight I think that episode wasn't as terrible as I felt it was while watching it. For Ji Yeon, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

It took me quite some time to realize that we were watching a flashback for Jin. Up to that point I wasn't too terribly disappointed in the episode, but once that revelation was clear, I immediately started asking myself why we were forced to watch so much wasted screentime of Jin running around the city with a stuff panda bear? His flashback scenes ended up being nothing more than a parlor trick by the writers to keep up this continual "is this a flashforward or a flashback" guessing game. I for one am getting a little tired of this game being played out each week.

Another major complaint I had for this episode was the irrational and out of character stupidity we saw in Sun on the island. In the past I have really enjoyed Sun's character and view her as an intelligent and logical thinking person. She seems to think out her actions with some degree of knowledge and consideration of the implications. But in Ji Yeon she appeared to react stupidly. After confronting Daniel about their intentions and getting his explanation that them getting off the island is not his decision she decides, irrationally, to run off to Locke's camp. But in reality she already knew, when choosing to go with Jack, that the intentions of the freighter weren't necessarily "what they seem." And Daniel's admission that its not his decision is far from threatening, at the most it seems non-committal to me. Yet she decided to leave the only two doctors on the island (even if she does think one of them is a liar) and run off with someone who she saw murder a woman just a few days ago? Not to mention the fact that Locke appears to have no desire or intention of ever leaving the island, and he has Ben with him. To me, this just seemed like an illogical and contrived method of getting Juliet to tell Jin about Sun's affair.

Although these items made me enjoy the "parts" of this episode less, as a whole there were some good and enjoyable things in this episode. For one, we discovered that Sun made it off the island and is one of the Oceanic 6, and that she had her baby safely. We also learned that Charles Widmore knew immediately that the salvage of the wreckage of flight 815 was fake, though whether he was involved in that coverup or not leaves a great deal of room for debate. And finally we learned for certain that MIchael is back, in the form of Kevin Johnson, and most certainly Ben's 'man on the boat.' Although this isn't entirely surprising for most of us, it was good to finally have it confirmed.

The other thing that I find interesting about the episode, in retrospect, is this whole issue with Jin's death. I may be wrong but I think this might be the first time that we've been flat out told that a character is dead, yet we'll continue to get to see him from week to week. Granted, we sorta thought that Charlie was going to die, but there was still enough ambiguity there that we didn't know for sure. And I also realize that there is a great deal of debate out there as to whether or not Jin is actually dead, but I still find the method in which the writers have given us this knowledge is very interesting and different and will be fun to see how it all plays out.

In closing I'll just say that although I only gave Ji Yeon ratings of 2 and 3 (out of 5) for the segments during the episode, my overall rating was somewhat higher, the episode in full being somewhat better than it's parts. As a whole I'd give Ji Yeon a 7 (out of 10) and say that I think we are in store for a fantastic, but probably confusing episode tonight, on the eve of a month long hiatus of our favorite show. I for one can not wait to meet Kevin Johnson.

Unlike Sun, Michael never seemed logical. Still, I hope they don't have too much "stupidity" happen with "Kevin Johnson"'s story.
