What's Hot: 4x09: The Smokey Train
If you're going to take your pet polar bear for a walk, you definitely want to make sure that you have a collar on it, you know, in case it gets lost, or goes after that sexy polar bear on the other side of the street. In 4x02, island newcomer Charlotte is seen in a flashback visiting a strange dig site in Tunisia. She find the bones of a polar bear in the desert with a collar next to it bearing (no pun intended) the Dharma Hydra Station Logo. What?! How old is Dharma exactly? Why is there a polar bear in the desert with a Hydra logo? How does this tie in with Dharma Polar Bears on the island? Time travel? Teleportation? My head hurts! View a bigger image after the jump.

This is the number one headf**k of the week, in my book.
My favorite personal theory on this: The Island exists waaaaay in the past. Since that time, there's been a pole shift placing the geographical location of the Island in modern-day Tunisia. Hence the archaeological dig unearthing obviously very old polar bear bones in the desert.
Yes or course they can swim, they live in the artic circle .. usually ;)

I think the average viewer would be completely lost with the whole flash back, flash forward, real time issue if it weren't somewhat consistent.
The scenes with the 4 helicopter people were flashbacks to connect some of the dots - i.e, why would an anthropologist be on the mission? Answer - she knows something about Dharma and the experiments (hence, the polar bear).
Why is Miles on the mission? Answer: he can communicate with dead people (and we surmise that communication with dead people is a key thing here, presumably Jacob being a ghost and several islanders being able to also communicate).
Why is the pilot of the helicopter on the mission? Not quite clear but we know from his flashback that he has a connection to 815 (I suspect more than we know yet).
Why is the physicist on the mission? Probably island properties but still unknown why he was crying upon the 815 news release.

i know that the paper showing that the flight was found doesn't necessarily mean that it JUST crashed. But they wouldn't be on the island allegedly surprised to see Oceanic 815 survivors and then flash forward to that scene of her reading the paper then seeing the Dharma symbol.
Argh... I hate this whole time travel thing.
I think it's real time. She would be 25 years old, and that is consistent with what she looked like. I suspect the Dharma project was doing time experiments (a la Dr. Candlewickwax and the #15 rabbit). A polar bear went back in time and got stuck.
If the flight was discovered much farther into the true future, the bodies (fake or otherwise) would be more decomposed and the plane more covered with barnacles.
just because the plane was JUST discovered doesnt mean it JUST crashed. they found the titanic 70 70 years after it sunk and it was major news!
it had to be a flashback because shortly before she saw this she saw the paper stating that Oceanic flight 815 was found.
that scene could have been 100 years in the future there would be no way to tell. It seemed strange that someone said she was born in 1979 - she looked much older than, what would be 25 (if the show is supposed to be in 2004)
Those were all FlashBACKS. Confirmed in interviews.
Does anyone else think that these are all Flashforwards and not flashbacks?

Have we ever seen this DARMA symbol before?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, it looks fimiliar, but I don't remember that exact symbol showing up before.
