In 4x01 we get to see Big Mike again, the ex-partner of Ana Lucia from season 2. It just wouldn't be LOST without character connections in the flashbacks... uh, and flash-forwards. Big Mike has finally made detective, and is for some reason investigating pretty much a non-issue with Hurley's flight from a convenient store turned into high speed chase. I hope the detective can crack the case. Big Mike asks Hurley if he met Ana on the plane, or before the flight left, but Hurley isn't saying anything. Apparently, the whole island thing is top secret amongst the Oceanic Six (Jack, Kate, Hurley and three unknowns).

It did strike me as peculiar that Big Mike asked Hurley if he had met Ana Lucia at the airport or on the plane - not if he had met her on the island. This suggests to me that the Oceanic six are claiming to be the only ones to have survived the crash of flight 815, and have somehow managed to return to civilization without alerting the authorities to the existence of the island and the other survivors.
Lost-N-Detroit-Yes, it was just a simple question, but the fact that Hurley lied is the meat and potatoes behind it.
lasombra-In the Flash Forward from last season, Jack wanted to go back, but in the S4 opener, he seems to be pretty well put together ever since getting back on dry land. The comment he made about the beard leads us to think that his S3 flash forward happened after Hurley's S4 flash forward. So the answer is this...After returning home, Jack is complacent with being off the island, but then something happens, he loses his grip on reality, and then wants to return. It's a weird time line, but that's the best you can get right now.
Of Oceanic Six why are 3 unknown? We've seen Hurley, Jack and Kate. From the last episode in season 3, it's very probable that Sawyer made it back as well. (Kate - Jack dialog) So for me there are only 2 seats remaining.
Not counting the possibility that there are only 6 ppl ALIVE who got rescued.
And I'm also confused whether Jack wants to / hopes to return to the island or not. (S3Ep22 vs. S4Ep01)
Just a simple question by Big Mike is all it was in asking about Ana Lucia. It would be the same if I said to you, "Ever met Mickey Mouse?" If we were talking about Disneyland. It was a simple question asking Hurley "if" he ever met Ana seeing that they were both on the same plane. I am sure that we shall see more of Big Mike in other future flash forwards giving more detail into possibly what is known about the Oceanic 6.
Of course, if John is one of the 6, I'll be really confused. :)
Wow, I just realized that this helps my theory that the secret they might be keeping is about who's STILL on the island. Hurley denies even knowing Ana Lucia. Maybe the six made a pact not to tell that John/John followers are still on the island..
Yeah, I watched it again, and all he says is that maybe Hurley met her on the plane, before they took off. My bad people.
Maybe the detective is on such a "little" case because he has a feeling there is something else going on with the other passengers than the 6's story, and he has a personal interest, so he is trying to crack to mystery.
He just asks about Ana-Lucia, because he knows she was on the same flight. No references to islands or anything else. We don't exactly know what story is given for the return on the Oceanic Six, but it appears that everyone else is assumed dead.
i thought he said he knew somebody on the same flight? and tried to get hurley to admit that he had met ana lucia
I'll have to watch this again, but didn't he (Big Mike) say something about the island?? Not like he knew what went on there, but that he knew they were on an island for a few months??
