The theme of 3x15 seems to be throw backs to previous episodes. We have "Watership Down" reappearing. We have Cassidy and Kate's mom making a comeback. We have the "Cowboy Up" phrase returning. The Game "Mouse Trap" makes a return. And... backgammon returns. Don't forget smokey as well. In 3x15, "Left Behind", Kate starts messing around with a backgammon set out of boredom while locked in The Others rec room. Backgammon is a recurring item on LOST. We first saw Locke teaching Backgammon to Walt, who later played with Hurley. Backgammon as Locke describes it:
Backgammon's the oldest game in the world. Archeologists found sets when they excavated the ancient ruins of Mesopotamia -- 5,000 years old. That's older than Jesus Christ. But their dice weren't made of plastic. Their dice were made of bones. Two players. Two sides. One is light, one is dark.

Jack probably hit him. We all know his little baby girl syndrome.
I noticed locke's black eye at the end of 3x14, just before ben had him uncuffed from the pipe prior to seeing his father, I assumed he got a beating for blowing up the sub
No not that black eye. The one he had in last nights episode.
I think the black eye was just a result of the massive blunt-force trauma after he fell from the window. An undefined amount of time passed from when he fell to when he got into the wheelchair. I think he got hurt so bad, everything was bruised black and blue. But we'll wait and see.
Also, remember in season one when Charlie said that if he had to put his faith in one person to get them off the island it would be Locke? I think that may be exactly what's happening.
What was the deal with his huge black eye? I'm guessing down the line we will flash back to what happened between him and his dad and there was a fight.
I think the backgammon game (as well as the Mouse Trap) is a definite nod to Locke, and his upcoming role on the island. From the looks of it, everyone thinks he's switching sides, going from the proverbial white side to black side. In actuality, I think he's fooling the Others into thinking he's one of them now, when in reality, he's trying to find the answers to his questions about the island, and save his friends.
So many people think that Locke plays the selfish, self-serving outsider in the group. I think we'll soon find out that his motives are altruistic in nature.
Maybe next week's title "One of Them, One of Us" is more of a question, as in "Are you one of them, or one of us?", as opposed to anything else.
Yeah, that line definitely stood out as a reference to the Boone and Shannon episode. Next week's title continues that trend. "One Of Us" and "One Of Them".
I would also suggest that Sawyer saying that he had to win "hearts and minds" (when hunting with Desmond) is a nod to the episode with that title from the first season.
In regards to backgammon Remember when Jack found "Adam & Eve" and in the pockets of on of the bodies, he found one black stone, one white. Possible backgammon pieces?
