In 3x13, "The Man from Tallahassee", we get a good look inside some of the houses in Othersville. The living quarters seem to be well decorated with what appears to be paintings of the island. In addition, in Ben's place, there is an abundance of "primitive" wood carved art. Could this be a link to the four toed statue? As Patchy pointed out, The Others have been on the island for a very long time. Given the statue, and these wood carvings, is it possible that The Others are linked to an ancient civilization that inhabited the island? Or, perhaps Ben just collects these pieces when he visits the outside world.
In addition, there are a number of other unique pieces in Ben's place. Several pictures of a younger Alex. A picture of some woman sitting in a chair in the jungle holding something in her hands. A map of constellations (I think). A picture of a thatched roof hut. And some kind of drawing.
It all looks like very bad feng-shui to me.

who says that the map of stars and planets ain't a map of the island, because most of the pictures, art,... are related to the island itself. And like Matahari already said: certain constellations correspond with certain hatches. Remember the old ancient egyptians?
And I also think the big circle around, is a kind of isolation around the island, so no one can leave.
A big Lost-fan from Belgium (Europe) ;)
In the top left picture, behind alex's head, there appears to be some sort of astronomical chart. Maybe galaxies, maybe just a star chart, but the top left of that picture looks to have other planets/stars. Does anyone else see what I'm talking about?
The picture with the two circles on it looks like an Aerial photo of land masses. Are the circles the bounds of the bubble shield over the islands?
This may sound weird, but maybe Dharma/the Others are trying to do what they did in Dan Brown's novel Angels and Demons, and are trying to fuse both science and religion.
I have noticed that there have been several different cultures intertwined into the others behavior, and I have wondered my self what similarities they share. Maybe this Jacob person has already thought out what common practices all the major religions of the world share, and has some crazy scheme to make everyone believe that they can "make God".
I don't know why I thought of that here, but I did.
Third pic down on the left shows the ocean with a valley area in it..just above Ben's head/bed. That pic is also in Jack's place above his shoulder as he's playing the piano. At least it looks similar. Maybe a duplicate since it's such a pretty scene??
the one clock when he looks at the child Alex portraits is different than the other, one said 3:25 and the other said 12:45 or something like that, but
atlantis i thought was supposed to be underwater... but i guess if your going to hide a group of scientist working on changing the equation that marks the end of human civilization, then i guess you would use all your money to find the lost atlantis. and the "magic box" didnt dharma also test also telekenisis (is that how you spell it?lol) and psychi stuff... maybe they where able to magnify peoples abilities, it would explain the smoke thing , it couldve been one of the others making them hallucinate . did anyone notice that eko was in the same exact spot where he died as where he fell down before he saw the smoke thing, it would explain all the other "hallucinations" everyone else has experienced(jack seeing his dad, kates horse, walts dog..tec etc) maybe even how they know so much about the losties... hmn..
did anyone notice that the 2 clocks shown are different times one shows 12:35 (approx) and the other 4:13-(approx)...when alex comes back in the room with sayids bag theres a shot of both clocks.
and im pretty sure thats a chinchilla in her hands ...ben did say there where giant hamsters running on wheels for electricity..lol
I think the idea of Atlantis has been thrown around before, and not that it was shot down, but nothing really came of it. I kind of believe that it could be something like that, but don't know how to go about proving something like that. If you find anything else, go nuts with it I say.
As far as the box goes, I think Ben was speaking more in a symbolic sense. I don't think there is some "magic box" anywhere on the island. But that's just me.
Look, First off, I don't even know how plausible this is. But... there has been a lot of Atlantis stuff in the media lately (discovery channel, history channel, etc.). I have always heard how Atlantis was a very advanced civilization. The 4 toed statue always confused me because it appeared to be mediterranean or something. Is it possible that this is what's left of the lost civilization of Atlantis, and that they are just that much MORE technologically advanced? Given the advancement of our nation in lets say 200 years, is it not possible that after 3000 or 4000 years that they would have developed a device to travel in time, or a box that gives you anything you want? Once again... just a comment to stir things up...
Know the star chart/ astrological/nomical chart isnt new. but i believe it still has significance. posted elsewhere but certain constellations correspond with certain hatches.
Swan-Cygnus
Arrow-sagitti
Hydra-Hydra
Staff-Ophiuchus ETC.. sorry too many yrs. of astron/ planetarium science
The woman in the painting looks a little like Karen Degroots, I think. Maybe the Degroots are Ben's mom and dad? That might explain why he was born on the island. Doesn't help with his last name being "Linus", but maybe that is his middle name?
se22... I noticed the butterfly too. And there's a glass pane with two butterflies in it also found in Ben's home. I'm not sure if it's a connection or if it's even significant but if it is, then it could be a symbol for metamorhphosis and we even have that S1 episode called "The Moth"... who knows, maybe there is a connection, or we could just be reaching and Ben is an entomologist by day... :)
The woman in the photo looks a lot like this http://tinyurl.com/ytzs2m . I'm 100% positive that it's just coincidence, but those cheekbones are strikingly similar, you must say...
Have we ever seen Henry's feet? Does he have 4 toes?
Painting of lady - she is holding a butterfly.
Painting of island valley - looks very similar to the seen where the guys drove the VW Van around.
the unidentified woman looks like Kate Winslet... not that she has anything to do with this just saying.. Maybe it's ben's mom
Maybe the big picture of the unidentified woman is supposed to be Alex's mother. Alex thinks she died, so it would make sense to have a picture of her to make it more believable to Alex.
That one sculpture of whatever it is kneeling down, I wonder if the leg out of view has a four toed foot?
I know we have sen alot of stuff Buddhist and Hindu, but I thought I'd share some insight into Ganesha.
Significance of the Ganesha Form
Ganesha's head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence, and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The noose in Ganesha's left hand is a gentle implement to capture all difficulties.
That star chart isn't anything new they created for the show. I had one like that when I was little.
cool screencap collage sledge...
wonder who the mystery gal is...
Juliet and Ben do "have history"...
The lady in the painting reminds me of Juliet. I'm more then likely totally off there. The do have "history" though remember?
