3x12: Mileage 108

3x12: Mileage 1083x12, "Par Avion", opens on a crash scene. Claire had been in an argument with her mom when they collided with a truck. The collision ejects Claire's mother from the vehicle, leaving her with severe brain damage.

As Claire awakes in the car, seconds after impact, there is a quick shot of the dashboard gauges. Fittingly, the mileage that is visible in the shot reads "108". Of course, 108 is the sum of "The Numbers", 4 8 15 16 23 42. It is also the number of minutes the countdown clock resets to when the button is pushed.

"108" and "The Numbers" appear frequently in flashbacks. While some importance has been attributed to the numbers, usually these just seem to be the writers having a little fun by hiding the numbers in the show for us to find.

The car is a late '90s green Honda Civic (I have one, same color). Look out your window the next time you're on a highway, every other car will be this one. The seatbelt light is a mistake, these inexpensive cars do not have passenger sensors. The light only comes on when the driver does not buckle up and Claire struggles to remove her belt after waking up.

This is not the shot of the inside of an Australian car. The only Australian cars that have MPH are the ones exported from Australia.

Also looking at the red light it would also confirm that somebody wasnt wearing their seatbelt, tut tut >:(

There are a lot of cars in America that have Km as well as MPH. The smaller numbers inside the bigger numbers of the spedometer are Km/h. Most European and Australian cars will have just Km/h since MPH is irrelevant. All in all I don't think it means anything either way.

As a metric system user by force, the speedometer is represented by Km (kilometers). If you look closely at the speedometer it seems rather evident that there is a Km as opposed to just m. Personally I do not see anything out of place in this image.

You are right Kel, Australian cars don't have MPH, and this car does. But they did have the steering wheel on the correct side in the crash, Claire's Mom flew out the left hand side of the car.

I didn't ever see the "truck" that caused the car crash. Truck isn't usually a word used in Australia, except for 18 wheelers. Normally they would call it a Ute.

this looks like an american car to me. coz australian cars, that Claire suppose to be driving one as she was in Sydney, normally don't have "miles" on the scale.

I know easter-eggs are a big thing for the producers...

...but making a car run just so its dials will show 10.8 at the end is just plain wrong. What about global-warming ???

I am banning the show from now on !!!

... :'( if I could only stop watching this show :'( ...

I did check the angle of the arms on the 1 and the 4, and they are the same. Since there is no sign of the cross bar, I think it is a 1. Especially since there was the tight shot on the dashboard (I immediately wrote a note down to check that), and it is followed by "08". Add to that the way they like to hide the numbers in the show (remember Hurley's dash), I'm pretty confident it is "108".

nah, its definitely a 1, if you match it up with the 1 that is to the right of it in the 100 (mph) it should clear that up, great pick up sledge as always!

I don't know, that "1" really looks like it's a "4" to these eyes.
